Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH)
WKU’s chapter of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) is a student-led organization that was chartered in 2013, with a mission to promote, research, preserve, interpret, and disseminate information about Black life, history, and culture in the region while bridging the gap between university and community. As an affiliate of the national Association for the Study of African American Life and History, founded in 1915 by Carter G. Woodson, the WKU chapter is committed to finding ways to integrate local and national histories into national as well as global conversations on topics relevant to the lives and experiences of Black people. In the past, the chapter has organized events covering the history of Black caricatures in film, an open lecture on Hip Hop by the renowned cultural critic Bakari Kitwana, and a public discussion series on race. Most recently, ASALH hosted a fishbowl panel discussion titled “Dear White People, Dear Black People,” which was aimed at answering questions about such topics as cultural appropriation, racism on campus, hair, social groups and more. WKU’s ASALH chapter allows students to meet regularly and share their mutual interest in all things pertaining to Black history and culture. For more information, contact: Dr. Andrew Rosa (andrew.rosa@wku.edu), ASALH faculty advisor.
