Students from Hardin Valley Academy Visit WKU Mahurin Honors College and Chinese Flagship Programs
- Tuesday, October 19th, 2021
On Friday, October 8, 28 high school students from Hardin Valley Academy in Knoxville, Tenn. visited the Mahurin Honors College and International Center at WKU to learn more about WKU’s MHC and Chinese Flagship programs.
Upon their arrival, the Hardin Valley Academy students were greeted by Chinese Flagship Director Dr. Ke Peng, along with Chinese 201 and 301 students. All students in the Flagship Program are WKU Honors students at WKU; however, students may start the program with little or no prior knowledge of Chinese.
After learning more about the Chinese Flagship Program, Honors College Student Ambassadors provided a campus tour for the students. After their tour, the guests enjoyed lunch at Fresh Food Café with student representatives, Honors College and Chinese Flagship professors, and MHC Admissions Counselor Laura King.
PCAL Associate Dean and English professor Dr. Merrall Price and Moder Languages Interim Director and English professor Dr. Alex Poole provided information sessions for the students about the value, benefits, and opportunities available in the programs. Before boarding their bus to return home, the students participated in language activities and were able to speak more informally with Chinese Flagship students.
"This gave me the opportunity to personally connect with students and discuss research, linguists, and their personal goals," said Dr. Poole.
The students left with a better understanding of the Chinese Flagship and Honors program and how both programs can help them achieve their future academic and personal goals.
