August 25 – September 26; Sandra C. Fernandez: On Migrations, Dreams and Dreamers
Ms. Fernandez’ exhibition, created for the WKU Gallery, will include a piece composed of thousands of rosaries, a series of prints and a video. The work addresses issues of south-of-the-border migration to the United States, speaking about the journey of those who cross the border, and about the children that were brought by their parents to this country (Dreamers). The installation reflects on the deaths of the thousands of people who attempt to cross the border in search of a better life in the US, while the works on paper talk about the Dreamers and their quest for being incorporated into society.
Ms. Fernandez’ work, based on her formative years as a child in Ecuador and her transitions to life and work in the United States, explores both the Ecuadorian and American cultures from the inside and out. This visual examination and synthesis of “what it means” to be a part of and/or apart from a specific culture is an excellent introduction to a State-side exploration of Ecuador.
