Title: Is Farm to School a Realistic Strategy for Promoting Sustainable Food Systems?
Abstract:
Farm to School (F2S) initiatives have exploded across the United States in recent years. As of 2015, F2S activities are reaching over 23.6 million children, in 42,000 schools, across all 50 states (USDA 2015). These programs, which range from bringing locally-grown foods into school lunch rooms for taste tests or meals, to building edible school gardens and expanding food-based lessons across the curriculum, are highly heterogeneous in their intent and their impact. Nevertheless, F2S programs are broadly promoted as a “win-win-win” for school children, for farmers, and for communities, and as an exemplar for a sustainable food system. In this presentation, I draw upon three years of ethnographic work with F2S efforts in Georgia, a leader in the F2S movement, to examine these efforts through a sustainability lens—to identify successes, areas where the promise of F2S is falling short, and opportunities for truly investing in F2S as a strategy for building a more sustainable food system.

Purple Dreams is an extraordinary arts education story following high school students on a three-year journey of transformation. Struggling with homelessness, low-income neighborhoods, gang-related violence, and single-parent households, these students broaden their world through a triumphant musical production that ultimately propels them into a world of opportunity previously beyond their reach.
This screening is a part of the 2017-2018 Southern Circuit Tour of Independent Filmmakers. The Capitol Arts Center and the Southern Kentucky Performing Arts Center (SKyPAC) are community screening partners for this film series along with The Bowling Green Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, Warren County Public Library, W.K.U. Cultural Arts Enhancement Series, Gallery 916, 440 Main, White Squirrel Brewery, and Susan and Chuck Webb.

The Museum is offering Pay As You Will each Saturday from February 3 through May 26. The Kentucky Museum wants to ensure that everyone in our community can see our exhibits.
Each Saturday, instead of standard admission prices guests will make a donation of admission--- at whatever amount. By eliminating cost barriers, it is our hope that more people can visit the Museum*. The Museum houses six major permanent exhibits and several changing exhibits. Visitor parking is available.
*Please remember the Museum is always free to all WKU faculty, staff and students with a WKU ID. Pay as You Will Saturdays does not apply to scheduled docent guided tour groups.
Saturday Museum Hours 9AM-4PM. For more information, please call 270-745-2592
