The 2019 Ethnographic Film Festival features short ethnographic films produced by undergraduate students in the ANTH 449 Ethnographic Video Production class in the spring semester. "That One Thing" focuses on WKU spirit. "Ragchew" examines ham radio operators. Competitive jump rope is the subject of "Backflips & French Braids." The foodways of international students on campus is the focus of "Reaching for International Foods." The Ethnographic Film Festival is free and open to the public. Presented in partnership with our exhibit sponsors and contributors, this event will feature Bosnian food, music, and stories that build on the exhibit's success and share the ongoing vibrancy of Bowling Green's Bosnian-American community.

About A Culture Carried
The Kentucky Folklife Program and the Kentucky Museum are pleased to offer A Culture Carried: Bosnians in Bowling Green. This exhibit is a partnership with the Kentucky Folklife Program's Bowling Green Bosnia Oral History Project, the Kentucky Museum, and the Department of Folk Studies and Anthropology.
“Based in a larger part on an ongoing oral history we have been conducting with our Bosnian neighbors, this exhibit is a way for us to share the intimate story of their journey to Bowling Green with museum visitors this year.” said Brent Björkman, Director of the Kentucky Folklife Program and Kentucky Museum. “Our staff is humbled by the way so many have let us into their lives. This project continues to be a gratifying collaboration and we are looking forward to sharing their story with those in our South-Central Kentucky community and far beyond.”
The exhibit is divided into sections, with each section highlighting a particular theme. The sections include: “From Bosnia to Bowling Green”; “Commemorating Loss”; “Traditional Arts of Bosnians in Bowling Green”; “The Art of the Home”; “Expressions of Faith”; and “A Foot in Two World: Growing up in Bowling Green.”
About the Bowling Green Bosnia Oral History Project: In the Fall of 2015, with support from the WKU Institute for Citizenship and Social Responsibility (now WKU’s Center for Citizenship & Social Justice), the Kentucky Folklife Program began the Bowling Green Bosnian Oral History Project in collaboration with members of Bowling Green’s Bosnian community and faculty from the Department of Folk Studies & Anthropology. This ongoing project documents the stories of Bowling Green’s Bosnian community. Western Kentucky University's Commencement Ceremony begins as all graduates join together representing their colleges to take their final walk down College Heights Blvd. before the conferring of their degrees.
Students will receive their Class of 2019 red towels to wave as they Topper Walk from the Kentucky Museum into L.T. Smith Stadium. Family and friends can watch the procession down the hill, then they will find their seats also in the family and friends sections of L.T. Smith Stadium.
Commencement will begin immediately following the seating of students into L.T. Smith Stadium.
Western Kentucky University's Commencement Ceremony will begin once students have been seated in L.T. Smith Stadium from the inaugural Topper Walk. During the Commencement Ceremony, each college will acknowledge their graduates, and President Timothy C. Caboni will present the graduates to the Board of Regents for the conferral of degrees.

Folklorists, Community Scholars, oral historians, folk artists, tradition bearers and other folklife enthusiasts are invited to the Kentucky Folklife Network Gathering at the African American Museum in Bowling Green, Kentucky on May 15th. Participants from all over western Kentucky will come together to develop plans for a Kentucky Folklife Network & Digital Magazine, coordinated by the Kentucky Folklife Program with support from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Kentucky Arts Council, and Western Kentucky University Department of Folk Studies and Anthropology.
The Kentucky Folklife Network & Digital Magazine is a new initiative of the Kentucky Folklife Program. The project aims to connect folklorists, Community Scholars, cultural workers, and folk arts-related organizations across the state as a way to share work and provide opportunities for professional development, and to generate connections, avenues of support, and potential partnerships. The work of the Kentucky Folklife Network will be showcased in a digital magazine hosted by the Kentucky Folklife Program that will welcome contributions from network members, folklorists, students, Community Scholars, and community partners throughout Kentucky.
The Folklife Network Gathering will take place Wednesday, May 15th from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the African American Museum in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Attendees will hear about recent projects by Kentucky folklorists and Community Scholars, along with plans for the Kentucky Folklife Network & Digital Magazine. Then, attendees will have the chance to share ideas and add to the discussion of what they want to see when the project launches in 2020. Dinner will be provided during the event, and attendees will have a chance to tour the museum.
All participants will be encouraged to stay in touch after the Gathering to share follow-up thoughts about the emerging Kentucky Folklife Network & Digital Magazine.

WKU’s Cultural Enhancement Series and the Kentucky Museum host award winning artist Patrick Dougherty in October 2018 on WKU’s campus in Bowling Green, Ky. Dougherty created Highbrow, a sculpture made from intertwined tree saplings, on the Museum's front lawn.
