On Thursday, October 5th 2023, the Kentucky Folklife Program in partnership with the WKU Folk Studies & Anthropology Department and the Kentucky Arts Council will be hosting “Willie Rascoe Day!” at the Pioneer Log Cabin on campus.
Hailing from Hopkinsville, Kentucky, Willie Rascoe is a breathtaking folk art and wood working sculptor specializing in the African and African American Experience. Collecting driftwood, metal, animal hides, and any other materials he can gather from nearby Kentucky lakes and wooded areas, Rascoe transcends craftsmanship by weaving spirit and heart together into one.
Rascoe has exhibited at the Kentucky Folklife Festival in Frankfort, the Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft in Louisville and the Kentucky Folk Art Center in Morehead where he was featured in the African-American Folk Art Exhibit. Roscoe's work is forever imprinted at the permanent collections within the Kentucky Folk ARt Center and the Kentucky History Center.
In 2012. Rascoe was gifted the Tanne Award by the Boston-based Tanne Foundation to recognize artists for outstanding achievement and for demonstrating exceptional talent and creativity. In 2020, Rascoe was the recipient of the Governer’s Awards in the Arts through the Kentucky Arts Council.
Throughout this day in October, Willie will be wood carving in the Pioneer Log Cabin, hosting workshops, participating in narrative stages, and engaging with the community.

Join us for the second event of this year’s PCAL Cultural Enhancement Series on Thursday, October 12th at 7 PM in the Jody Richards Hall Auditorium as we host author, law professor, and Kentucky State Senator, Cassie Chambers! Chambers will discuss her book, Hill Women: Finding Family and a Way Forward in the Appalachian Mountains. A book signing will immediately follow the talk. A QR attendance code will also be available.
After rising from poverty to earn two Ivy League degrees and then returning to Kentucky to work for Kentucky Legal Aid and as a local legislator, Chambers pays tribute to the strong “hill women” who raised and inspired her, and whose values have the potential to rejuvenate a struggling region. Admission is free, no tickets are necessary, and seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.
At all PCAL Cultural Enhancement Series events, we will be collecting donations for the International Center of Kentucky, our Adopt a Nonprofit partner. Donations are not required, but strongly encouraged. Click here for the donation list.
