For Will Mason-Walker, music has always been more than just a passion—it’s been a part of his identity. As he wraps up his Master of Music in Choral Conducting at Western Kentucky University, he's reflecting on his time with the Department of Music marked by mentorship, meaningful performances, and a deep love for the art of making music.
Originally from Winchester, Kentucky, Will began his musical career at the University of Kentucky, earning a degree in music education. After landing what he calls his “dream job” at East Jessamine Middle School, he felt the pull towards higher education, which eventually lead him to WKU.
“I knew I wanted to go further, and Dr. Hondorp, who’s been a mentor of mine for years, made the decision easy,” he said. “The support here is unmatched.”
Will found more than just academic rigor in WKU’s Department of Music; he found a second family. “The professors really take the time to get to know their students. Whether you’re in band, chorus, or orchestra, there’s a genuine effort to connect,” he shared.
Among his favorite courses were Conducting Seminar with Dr. Paul Hondorp and Orchestral Literature with Dr. Jason Rosenholtz-Witt. “I’m a huge music history nerd,” he laughed. “Those classes really fed that side of me.”
One of his most memorable experiences was preparing and participating in the graduate conducting recitals. “Chorale put in so much work, it was powerful. That kind of collaboration stays with you,” he said.
With his eyes now set on a Ph.D. in Music Education at Michigan State University, Will is confident that WKU has prepared him for the next chapter. “I’ve learned so many lessons, both on and off the podium,” he said. “Each one brought me closer to my dream.”
His advice to future students? “Everyone has a unique path to excellence. Work hard and believe in yourself.”
As he moves forward, WKU’s Department of Music proudly sends off another passionate conductor ready to inspire the next generation just as WKU inspired him.
