Students receive awards in Hearst program’s national championships

Brynn Anderson of Bowling Green and Armando Sanchez of Clovis, Calif., finished second and third, respectively, in the National Photojournalism Championship while Zack Conkle of Louisville finished second in the National Multimedia Championship. Anderson and Conkle received $4,000 scholarships; Sanchez received a $3,000 scholarship.
In awards selected from semifinal portfolios, Sanchez received a $1,000 award for Best Single Photograph and Anderson received a $1,000 award for Best Photo Story.
Christian Randolph of Oxnard, Calif., received a $1,500 scholarship as a national photo finalist.
The Hearst national championships in writing, photojournalism, television and radio broadcast news and multimedia were conducted June 4-7 in San Francisco.
Often called the “Pulitzers of College Journalism,” the Hearst program holds yearlong competitions in writing, photojournalism, broadcast news and multimedia offering up to $500,000 in scholarships, matching grants and stipends.
WKU’s School of Journalism & Broadcasting finished fourth in the Hearst program’s 2011-12 Overall Intercollegiate Competition, the school’s 19th consecutive finish in the top eight nationally. WKU won the Intercollegiate Photojournalism Competition for the fourth consecutive year and 20th time in 23 years and also won the Intercollegiate Multimedia Championship.
