Each year the WKU English department offers writing contests in creative writing, composition, and literature for area high school students. First-place winners receive $200 in cash and a $500 scholarship to major or minor in English at WKU; second-place winners receive $100 in cash and a $300 scholarship to major or minor in English at WKU; and third-place winners receive $50 in cash and a $200 scholarship to major or minor in English at WKU. Essays will be evaluated by members of the English Department.
This year’s prompts were released on September 12, and the deadline for submissions is January 17. The English Department will invite finalists, their teachers, and family to campus for a reception and ceremony on Saturday, February 15.
Last year’s contest recognized 30 finalists from Kentucky and Tennessee and the department awarded nine prizes.
“Last year, the number of participants almost doubled compared to 2018, and we expect the contest to continue to grow,” said Dr. Rob Hale, Head of English. “We see this contest as an opportunity to reward great writing and to celebrate the wonderful work that so many high English teachers are doing in our region.”
