On Wednesday, October 21, 2020, the English Salon held a virtual meeting where attendees were invited to talk about any piece of media or art that had made them happy during quarantine. WKU English majors Elizabeth Roth and Emily Moore hosted the event. The event stemmed from faculty conversations with the English Student Advisory Council on ways to keep students engaged in the department when so many departmental activities have been moved on an online format.

After brief introductions, attendees shared movies, books, music, art, and creative projects that have kept them engaged in the recent months. “The purpose of this is to talk about what media we have been engaging with since quarantine and in the past few months too, even during school,” said sophomore Emily Moore.

Discussion kicked off with movies and television shows that had been occupying students time before moving into the soundtracks that accompany that media. Netflix hits such as The Umbrella Academy, The Haunting of Hill House, I am Not Okay with This and Sex Education were all praised for their use of soundtracks and unique camera work and how those things can enhance the viewers experience while watching the show.

Students were given the opportunity to share recommendations for music, podcasts and art that they have been enjoying recently. Ella Corder shared artwork from French artist Paul Gauguin and discussed his use of color with the group. Three Tahitians, By the Stream, Autumn and The Call by Gauguin were all shared via the screen share ability on Zoom.

Attendees also shared recommendations to watch for Halloween during the month of October. Twin Peaks, The Haunting of Bly Manor and Stranger Things were all suggested as spooky things to watch this season.
