Five students in the Department of English have received the Benjamin A. Gilman scholarship which offers grants of up to $5,000 for undergraduate students to pursue academic study abroad opportunities.
Bethel Aklilu is a junior from Mount Juliet, TN. She does not currently have any plans after graduation, but she plans to pursue a career in rights-based work.
Receiving the Gilman Scholarship was so impactful for me. It allowed me to make my study abroad dreams a reality and continues to provide me with new opportunities through the Gilman Scholar Network.
Dylan Anderson is from Somerset, KY and was also a recipient of the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship.
Felicia McCrosky is a sophomore from Frankfort, KY. After graduation she plans to pursue a master’s degree in Consumer Psychology in the UK.
I just hope that my study abroad program doesn't get canceled again so I can use the scholarship--since it is the reason I'm able to study abroad in the first place.
Fallon Russell is a senior from Franklin, KY. After graduation, she hopes to work in higher education administration and pursue a master’s degree.
While there are still a lot of unknowns at this point, I hope to use my Gilman scholarship to study abroad immediately after I graduate. If I am unable to travel during the summer of 2021, I hope to use the funds for a virtual learning opportunity, but no matter what happens, I'm honored to be selected for this scholarship.
Catherine Sheffield is a sophomore from Clarksville, TN. Sheffield was chosen as an alternate recipient for the scholarship. After graduation, she plans to stay at WKU to pursue a master’s degree in English.
My hopes for this scholarship are that it will enable me to study abroad at Harlaxton to attend more English courses and complete an internship.
