Helpful Information:

Sociology is a social science that studies how societies affect and affected by individuals.

Criminology is a sub-discipline of sociology which focuses on understanding the social problem of crime, and society’s reaction to it.  In addition to crime, sociologists study:

  • the practice and effects of social stratification (classifying people on the basis of race/ethnicity, social class, gender identity, and the like)
  • community development in rural, urban, regional, national, and international contexts as well as the environmental impacts of community development on the natural world
  • social institutions such as family, religion, the media, work organizations and occupations, healthcare, as well as political and economic structures or
  • social interaction in small groups.

In addition, the department has a major in Diversity and Community Studies which heavily draws from the first two bullet points above.

Given the scope of our studies, we hope that the design can incorporate this diversity rather than lean too heavily on one theme more than others.

Finally, Sociology has been around for more than 100 years.  During that time, there have been many quotations that are just as relatable today as they were when they were written.  Such quotes could serve as inspiration, or be included in the design in some way.

Just a few thoughts to help guide the development of your design.  We look forward to seeing what you come up with!
