Antonio Clements, Outstanding Sociology Major

clements

Congratulations to Antonio Clements, who has been named Outstanding Sociology Major. During his time at WKU Antonio has participated in many different groups around campus. He was a member of the Hilltopper Organization of Latin American Students, the Spanish Club President, and a Brother and Internal Vice President of Beta Gamma Phi multicultural fraternity. Antonio accomplished all of this while remaining steadfast in his Catholic faith. During his time at WKU he was an active parishioner in the St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Campus Center.

He also has had many opportunities to study abroad and took every chance he was given. Some of his experiences led him to Mexico, China, and Ecuador. It was in Ecuador that he was able to study at La Universidad San Francisco da Quito, where he completed coursework in sociology in both English and Spanish.

Antonio has been involved in the community as well. For nearly six years he worked as a part of the Community Living Supports program, where he served as an Advocate during his tenure there and a counselor for the summer camp. During this time, he worked with special needs children and their parents to meet goals that would benefit the child’s learning and interpersonal relations. He also would work to provide accommodations to the children with special needs to ensure their inclusion in camp activities.

His experiences in the sociology classes he took gave him the chance to explore society in a detailed manner, both locally and abroad. His global learning experiences and the knowledge he gained in the classroom have helped him develop a global mindset; a skill he considers, indispensable in an ever-connected world. Antonio is grateful for his time spent learning sociology at WKU. He says the faculty in the department show genuine care for their students. Something that is displayed in their willingness to help their students succeed. Antonio appreciates the hard work they put into bettering their students. “Their mentorship and guidance has been unmeasurably helpful.”

After graduation Antonio plans to spend a year abroad in Taiwan with the Fulbright English Teaching Program. During his time with this program he will gain firsthand experience teaching English overseas to children in primary and secondary school, or even in a university setting.
