Jackie Travis, Outstanding Student of the Sociology MA Program

Congratuations Jackie Travis, Outstanding Sociology MA student

Jackie is the first in her family to attend college. While working on her associate degree at SKYCTC she became a math tutor as she realized that many people are unable to fulfill their dreams because they struggle with math. As a tutor, Jackie discovered a passion for helping others navigate the college process through the completion of their degree. In fact, it was through her undergraduate sociology courses that she realized many problems assocaited with learning math are social. As a result, she decided to pursue graduate studies in sociology at WKU so that she would be in a better position to help others fulfill their dreams. Jackie states, "Understanding people in society and institutions allows me to help combat social problems, such as those I discovered early on when I observed my peers' struggle with math." After graduation, she hopes to work as a community college teacher so that she can continue to empower students.
