Included: Official Orienteering map, compass, gear, camping permits & campfire
Learn some cool skills that you can put to practice! Learn how to navigate yourself around to different points using only a map and a compass. The course includes control markers allowing you to verify your location as you go. Trip Leaders will give instructions on how to use your map, and compass to navigate this course. Hoosier National Forest is home to 266 miles of hiking trails, with sandstone cliffs, seasonal waterfalls, Hemlock trees, and rare wintergreen plants. With about a 3-hour drive to the forest, feel free to pack your homework or a book for the ride! ORAC will provide any tents, sleeping bags, or other equipment you might require, except for food and your clothes. All skill levels are welcome!
Tentative Trip Itinerary
Day 1:
- Drive to Story, IN
- Pick up maps
- Head to campsite to set up basecamp
- Map & Compass lesson
- Try out the orienteering course
- Relax by the campfire
- Start with a warm breakfast
- Put your skills to the test with a more difficult course
- Play a few friendly rounds of who can shoot the best bearing
- Head back to campus

Join us at the Challenge Course as we send some fun climbs on our climbing wall and sip on hot cocoa! It’s the perfect way to meet some new friends, develop new skills, and greet the chilly weather. The only thing you have to be experienced in is blowing on hot cocoa – beginner and expert climbers are all welcome!
*Please bring a water bottle, layers of clothes, and closed-toed shoes!*

The Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area preserve the Cumberland River and its tributaries in northeastern Tennessee and southeastern Kentucky. With more than 150 miles of trails, Big South Fork has wonderful explorations of scenic overlooks and its prominent feature, the river gorge. This region contains one of the highest concentrations of natural bridges in the eastern United States. From the river gorge with its magnificent bluffs to the natural arches and unusual hoodoos come experience this neat nature with ORAC for a memorable, exciting weekend stay under the stars!
Tentative Trip Itinerary
Day 1:
- Meet early morning at Preston Center to pack up the van
- Depart Preston
- Arrive at trailhead
- Begin hiking trail!
- Go to the cool lookout or another point of interest
- Set up camp, eat dinner, and settle in for the night under the stars
- Goodnight!
Day 2:
- Wake up!
- Pack up camp to begin hiking
- Hike rest of the trail, stop for lunch and see some cool animals
- Hike out to the van and pack up
- Depart for the return to Preston
- Arrive back at Preston in the evening
