Dr. Reece is a historian of nineteenth-century America. His work has focused on political culture, law, race, and the South. He is author of several articles and book chapters on Reconstruction and Desegregation in South Carolina. He is currently writing a history of 19th century Republican efforts in crafting civil rights policy.
Dr. Reece believes history is an important foundation in a liberal arts education. History classes not only provide foundational knowledge, but also provide opportunities for students to broaden their analytical and critical thinking skills, their research skills, and their writing skills, both as historians and in general. History is an important discipline for understanding how the world works. Lessons learned from the past help us form a better future.
Dr. Reece grew up in Alaska. He obtained his undergraduate degree from University of Alaska – Fairbanks. His interest in Reconstruction and Southern History led him to Clemson University for his Master’s degree and to Bowling Green State University for his Ph.D. He considers his bride of 21 years one of his greatest assets and enjoys the company of their two black cats. He is an avid baseball fan and enjoys watching Star Trek.
