The School of Teacher Education (STE) within the College of Education and Behavioral Sciences is a national leader in teacher preparation.  As the first educator preparation program in the State with a registered teacher apprenticeship program, STE works closely with school districts through traditional face-to-face teaching and innovative Grow You Own programming to develop highly prepared teachers.  Housed in The School of Teacher Education at Western Kentucky University, the Interdisciplinary Early Childhood Education (IECE) Program offers both undergraduate and graduate degrees in Interdisciplinary Early Childhood Education, birth through kindergarten. The Gatton Academy seeks qualified candidates for the position of Residential Counselor.  The Gatton Academy is a public residential STEM high school program, established and funded by the Kentucky legislature, on the campus of Western Kentucky University.  Students complete their last two years of high school and earn at least 60 hours of college credit. This is a 10-month position and reports to the Assistant Director of Residential Life. Gatton Academy staff are employees of Western Kentucky University. 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

• Creates and manages a safe, healthy, and nurturing living/learning environment within the residence hall.
• Develops a supportive community consistent with the Academy's creed of Integrity, Compassion, Respect, Equality, and Diversity through creative educational, cultural, social, and recreational programming.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

• Performs general plumbing repair to include installing, maintaining and repairing valves, faucets, traps and other sanitary fixtures, as well as maintaining piping systems by opening clogged drains and replacing washers on leaky faucets
• Performs routine preventative maintenance to the interior of buildings such as installing/changing various lamps and ballasts in building light fixtures and laying floor tile and installing ceiling tile to ensure the physical condition of buildings does not deteriorate
• Performs general carpentry work in the maintenance of buildings, roofs, stairways, partitions, doors, door locks, windows and screens
• Uses tools ranging from common hand and power tools, such as hammers, hoists, saws, drills, and wrenches, to precision measuring instruments and electrical and electronic testing devices to repair, replace and reassemble equipment
• Perform routine preventive maintenance to ensure that building systems operate efficiently such as fan coils, air handling units, unit ventilators, pumps, motors, exhaust fans and other related equipment
• Diagnose mechanical problems and determine how to correct them, checking blueprints, repair manuals, or parts catalogs, as necessary.

The WKU String Academy seeks a pre-college instructor of violin to teach students ages 4 to 18 individual and group lessons. Lessons and classes are scheduled throughout the week during the Spring and Fall semesters (15 weeks each). The ideal candidate must be a strong performer with effective instructional skills, possess an ability to recruit and retain a vibrant studio of pre-college violinists, and have a willingness to develop and grow their teaching. This position includes potential summer festival teaching at the WKU String Academy.

The WKU String Academy is a preparatory program for violin and viola students housed at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, KY. It fosters an environment that is both nurturing and demanding, providing students with the opportunity to study a string instrument from the beginning to advanced levels. Solo recitals, group concerts, public performances, and master classes by world-renowned artists provide students with outstanding developmental opportunities. Our pedagogy is based around the principles of Shinichi Suzuki, with strong influences from Mimi Zweig and Paul Rolland. 

Duties

• Teach private lessons to students ages 4 to 18
• Lead group classes for students ages 4 to 18
• Participate in and attend student recitals
• Communicate and work closely with WKU String Academy Director
• Communicate clearly and effectively with student caregivers 
• Participate in local outreach and recruiting events
• Stay updated with current trends and developments in string pedagogy

Potential opportunities

• Area orchestral performing
• Work with a local non-profit musical outreach organization

• Bachelors degree in music performance or music education (violin or viola)
• Training in pedagogy (registered Suzuki training, university-level courses, etc.)
• Experience teaching applied violin lessons
• Proficiency in violin or viola playing for performance and demonstration

Hourly Rate:  $45-$60

Guaranteed 20 hours per week during the Fall and Spring semesters (15 weeks each) for the first year.
