Art 331, Visual Thinking

Instructor: Natalie Tyree, Assistant Professor of Graphic Design

Inspired by the aesthetic of the group collaboration known as "Type Hike," this project was generated by a semester long creative research project. A play on words, this project celebrates the visual and historic character of Downtown Bowling Green and the surrounding area. Taking inspiration from "Type Hike," students focused on marrying the idea of design as art in their poster design techniques and used this opportunity to be a visual celebration of the city and how the city-center helped to develop and establish Bowling Green throughout the city's history where type and image are married together.

They began by taking a self-led walking tour of downtown to sketch, collect images, and talk to local business owners. After selecting that area and/or buildings they would focus on, they began creating visuals for their posters - a process which was carried through multiple phases. Students also utilized Special Collections housed in the KY Museum to further their research; they were able to dig through old images, documents, and news archives to learn more about a specific area or building. This project allowed students, several whom are Bowling Green Natives, to connect with the town and to learn about its rich history by including their own visual interpretation.
