 INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF CUBA 

TEACHING AND LEARNING RESOURCES 

Materials to aid in our university-wide study of Cuba, including resources to support the inclusion of Cuba-related content in both teaching and research. 

 Cuba 101. A video recording of the introductory presentation by Dr. Andrew McMichael and Dr. Marc Eagle that provided an overview of Cuba’s history and culture. 

 IYO Cuba bibliography. A curated list of resources (arranged by discipline) available at the WKU Libraries. 

 Spanish-American war: Primary Resources at WKU Collections. This compilation of digital resources includes photos, letters, news clippings, books, and other resources pertaining to the Spanish-American War, the main catalyst for which was the issue of Cuba’s independence. Housed in the Department of Library Special Collections, these have been made available as a teaching resource for courses that will explore the Spanish-American War over the course of the year. 

SPRING 2019 

 IYO Featured Author: Julia Cooke. Journalist and author of The Other Side of Paradise: Life in the New Cuba. 

o January: NPR Interview with Julia Cooke. 

o Mar 14: Author Visit. An author talk and other programming while Julia Cooke is on campus (7pm, GRH Auditorium). 

 Jan 22-Apr 5: The Island of My Love: The Faces and Stories of Cuba. An exhibition featuring the stories of art, artists, teaching, and photo documentary (Project Simple) curated by Miwon Choe (Art) and Jesús Molina of Cuba (FAC Main and Corridor Galleries). Programming includes a P-12 Teacher Workshop (Feb 1-2), lecture by Cuban-American author Ruth Behar (Feb 20-22), and visit by the creators of Project Simple (Mar 20-23). 

 Mar 25-31: Visit by Cuban Entrepreneurs. GFCB and the Center for Leadership Excellence will host two Cuban entrepreneurs for activities including an Entrepreneurial Speaker Series Panel, course presentations, and meetings with local business owners. 

 Mar 9 – May 28: Arte Cubano. An exhibition highlighting Cuba’s incredible diversity and representing more than twenty-five Cuban artists’ ruminations on the quotidian, social, and political realities of the island and the contemporary world (Kentucky Museum). Opening reception on March 15, 5-7pm.
