IYO: Cuba Spring film festival..Week 2
- Monday, April 22nd, 2019
Just a reminder about the Cuban films we will be showing on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evening this week as part of the International Year of Cuba. All screenings are at 7 pm (and all are swipeable), but note that the room numbers are different each night.
Tuesday, April 23, in Cherry Hall 210
Havana Motor Club (2015): a documentary film about Cuba's underground drag-racing scene; whether you are interested in Cuba or hot rods, the film offers a fascinating look at a group of people pursuing their passion despite opposition from the government, which outlawed car racing shorly after 1959.
Wednesday, April 24, in Cherry Hall 125
¿Quién Diablos es Juliette? / Who the Hell is Juliette? (1997): a very different kind of documentary, about a teenage prostitute ("jinetera," although what this actually means is an important part of the film) by a Mexican director who mainly did music videos, but found the subject so compelling he spent three years creating this film.
Thursday, April 25, in Cherry Hall 239
¡Vampiros en La Habana! / Vampires in Havana (1985): a very goofy cartoon movie about a vampires, organized crime, a secret formula to make vampires immune to sunlight, and a Cuban trumpet player — it’s got a fantastic soundtrack by Arturo Sandoval, as well as some fairly problematic representations of Afro-Cuban characters that are worth discussing.
Also note that on Tuesday night, at 5 pm, there will also be a screening of Unfinished Spaces, a documentary about Cuba’s National Art Schools project, by turns ambitious and exciting, and then neglected and abandoned, and finally rediscovered and restored. See https://www.wku.edu/kentuckymuseum/education/unfinishedspaces.php for more details. (I’ll be leading discussion; join me for both films on Tuesday to maximize your Cuba experience!)
For descriptions and details of these and other events, see the International Year of Cuba Calendar of Events.
