Spanish major Esteban Casana

Spanish major Esteban Casana is among the thousands of Kentucky natives whose parents or grandparents hail from Latin America. Once very rare, those who grow up in the United States yet speak Spanish at home (i.e., heritage speakers) are becoming a demographic reality on WKU’s campus. “As a heritage speaker, I believe it’s a no brainer to why one should learn Spanish or whatever language they speak that applies to him/her apart from English. Speaking Spanish and understanding it have opened doors. I am able to communicate with more people. Most heritage speakers also have the added ability of being bi-cultural.” Like most heritage speakers of Spanish, Casana received all of his primary and secondary education in English, and thus needed to improve his grasp of academic grammar and writing: “My writing in Spanish has improved the most. I can say without a doubt that I know a lot more now than I did 3 years ago, as well as the obvious of refining my speaking skills in Spanish.” Currently, he is completing an internship at the International Center of Bowling Green, a refugee resettlement center which helps newcomers from all over the world obtain housing, jobs, and medical care. His daily responsibilities necessitate the use of both English and Spanish. Primarily motivated by a desire “to give back and help the community that I have called home for the past 21 years of my life,” Casana has also gained knowledge of clients’ cultures and the challenges they face. He also gives back by coaching the junior varsity boys’ soccer team at Bowling Green High School. After graduation, he plans to study law.
