Phi Alpha is a national honor society for social work students. The purposes of Phi Alpha Honor Society are to provide a closer bond among students of social work and promote humanitarian goals and ideals. Phi Alpha fosters high standards of education for social workers and invites into membership those who have attained excellence in scholarship and achievement in social work. In addition to recognizing excellence, the chapter will carry out one service project per academic year to give back to the community. The Delta Mu Chapter of Phi Alpha Honor Society was established at Western Kentucky University in 1994. 
 
Purpose: To provide a closer bond among students of social work and promote humanitarian goals and ideals. Phi Alpha fosters high standards of education for social workers and invites into membership those who have attained excellence in scholarship and achievement in social work. 
 
An undergraduate student is eligible for membership after achieving the following national and local chapter requirements. 
  1. Declared Social Work as a Major 
  2. Achieved sophomore status 
  3. Accepted in the BSW program at WKU 
  4. Completed 9 semester hours in Social Work courses 
  5. Achieved an overall grade point average of 3.30 (on a 4.0 scale) 
  6. Achieved a 3.25 grade point average in required social work courses 
A graduate student is eligible for membership after achieving the following national and local chapter requirements: 
  1. Completed 9 semester hours of graduate social work courses 
  2. Achieved a minimum grade point average of 3.7 
  3. Character consistent with the NASW Code of Ethics. 
There is an initiation fee of $40 which covers the lifetime membership dues, a certificate, pin, membership card, and an honor cord for graduation. Application forms are available in the Social Work Administrative Office (AC 110), or from Phi Alpha officers or Dr. Jay Gabbard, faculty sponsor.
