Dr. Missy Travelsted, DNP, FNP-C, PTA presented her research "Anabaptists' Knowledge of Newborn Screening" at the 2024 National Amish Health Care Conference. The conference is a continuing education event for evidence-based, community-led initiatives that have improved the health of the Amish and Plain communities. It brings Amish and Plain community members, community practitioners, and researchers together from across the United States.
Dr. Travelsted's study, co-investigated with Dr. Eve Main and Dr. Susan Jones, explored the knowledge and awareness of newborn screening practices within the Anabaptist population. The findings of the study have provided insight for implementation of educational sources to improve rates of newborn screening in the Anabaptist population.
Conducted in 2022, the research was funded by the WeCare Clinic and WKU’s Kappa Theta Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International. Travel expenses were provided by a WKU CHHS Quick Turn-Around Grant.
