WKU Academic Advising

WKU Advising coordinates academic advising activities among undergraduate colleges and academic departments for undergraduate students. At WKU, academic advising is required for all associate and baccalaureate degree-seeking students until graduation. This office advises all Exploratory/Generally Undecided students and helps these students plan for their potential major.

Best Expectation Programs (BEP)

The Best Expectations Program (BEP) is a part of the Advising and Career Development Center (ACDC). BEP teaches students the importance of positive study habits, time management, and provides academic support to help students be independent and successful learners.

WKU The Learning Center (TLC) - Tutoring Services

The Learning Center (TLC) aims to promote student success, enhance student performance, and increase student retention at Western Kentucky University. TLC helps students enhance their academic performance and sharpen their skills to be successful Western Kentucky University graduates.

WKU Math Help Lab

The Mathematics Department provides a Math Tutoring Lab to provide free tutoring to students taking classes in our department, especially those taking general education mathematics courses.

WKU Glasgow Math Lab

The Math Lab at WKU Glasgow is part of the START Center. It offers tutoring for all math classes offered at Glasgow as well as several of the online math classes. 

WKU Writing Center

The Writing Center offers individual conferences about writing with our staff of English majors and graduate students. These services are free and available to all Western Kentucky University students.

WKU Glasgow Writing Center

The Writing Center at WKU Glasgow is part of the START Center. It offers individual conferences about writing with our staff of well-trained student tutors. These services are available to all Western Kentucky University students, including dual credit students, as well as students who attend South-central Kentucky Community and Technical College.

Barren River Aging and Disability Resource Center (ADRC)

The Aging and Disability Resource Center (ADRC) is funded through the Administration on Aging. It is a collaborative effort between the Administration on Aging and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. The objective of the ADRC is to be a "one-stop shop" for senior information and resources. The ADRC provides information regarding long-term care services, public assistance programs, and private businesses.

This is a list of many of the different counseling services available in Bowling Green, Kentucky. While this list is not all inclusive, it is a good starting point in a journey towards bettering mental health. 

Delta Alpha Pi International Honor Society

This is an international fraternity for high-achieving undergraduate and graduate students with disibilities. An eligible undergraduate student must have 24 completed hours with a 3.10GPA and a graduate student must have 18 completed hours with a 3.30 GPA. Sertoma's Hard of Hearing or Deaf and Communicative Disorders Scholarship

Sertoma’s Scholarship for the Hard of Hearing or Deaf, is the leading scholarship for hard of hearing or deaf students since the program’s inception in 1994. Students with clinically significant bilateral hearing loss, graduating from high school, or undergraduate students pursuing four-year college degrees in any discipline are eligible for the scholarship.

Parking Information for Visitors & Students with Disabilities

In order to park in disability spaces on campus, you will need a WKU issued disability permit in conjunction with your state placard.  There are two disability classifications -- Tier 1 for faculty/staff and Tier 2 for students.  Disability spaces are marked with signs.  Temporary medical accommodations are also available through PTS.

Parking and Transportation

The AAPD is a political and advocacy organization that centers around disability policy and the disability rights movement.

Attention Deficit Disorder Association (ADDA)

The ADDA offers support, resources, and connection to adults with ADHD.

Association on Higher Education and Disability (AHEAD)

This college support program, founded by the Autism Education and Research Institute, is dedicated to the academic success of students with autism, dyslexia, learning disabilities, and ADHD. It provides students with coaching, networking opportunities, and mentorships.

Association of Medical Professionals with Hearing Losses

The Association of Medical Professionals with Hearing Losses provides information, promotes advocacy and mentorship, and creates a network for individuals with hearing loss interested in or working in health care fields.

Coalition for Disability Access in Health Science and Medical Education (CDAHSME)

CDAHSME's mission is to develop, advance and disseminate leading practices to facilitate access and opportunity for people with disabilities in health science education. 

Described and Captioned Media Program (DCMP)

The U.S. Department of Education funds the DCMP, which has created a media library of over 4,000 free captioned titles for educational use.

DO-IT Project - Disabilities, Opportunities, Internetworking, and Technology

This project focuses on advancing the success of people with disabilities in education, research, & careers.

Hearing Loss Association of America (HLAA)

HLAA strives to give people the tools they need to live more successfully with hearing loss.

Learning Disabilities Association of  America (LDA)

The LDA was founded in 1963 by parents interested in finding more resources for children with disabilities. The organization has since grown into an advocacy and educational resource for adults, parents, and educators.

National Association of the Deaf (NAD)

NAD is a civil rights organization for the deaf and hard of hearing. 

National Center on Accessible Instructional Materials

While their site is aimed toward school administrators and educators, it lists a variety of learning resources and tools for students with physical disabilities.

National Center for College Students with Disabilities (NCCSD)

The NCCSD is an online resources for students, parents, faculty, and other professionals. They have a clearinghouse for resources on disability and education, information about campus organizations for college students with disabilities, and an organization for and led by students with disabilities.

National Center for Learning Disabilities (NCLD)

This organization hosts a number of advocacy programs and events for adults with learning disabilities.

National Federation of the Blind (NFB)

Students can find a wealth of scholarships, activities, publications, and academic resources through this organization that is dedicated to serving visually impaired and blind populations.

Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID)

RID is a national membership organization that advocates for excellence in the delivery of interpretation and transliteration services between people who use sign language and people who use spoken language. 

US Autism & Asperges Association (USCAP)

The USAAA’s College Autism Project (CAP) strives to educate colleges and universities on how to work with students on the autism spectrum.

U.S. Department of Education Office for Civil Rights (OCR)

OCR’s mission is to ensure equal access to education and to promote educational excellence through vigorous enforcement of civil rights in our nation’s schools.

Counseling Services

Please feel free to call the Counseling Center with any questions you may have about counseling (270-745-3159).  Your first meeting with a counselor (what we call a client consultation session), will be by Zoom or by phone.  You and the counselor will determine what you need and the best way to provide it to you.  Additional sessions, if needed, may be on-line or in person. 

Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance (DBSA) of Bowling Green 

DBSA offers a free support group. All students with mental health concerns are welcome to attend; no formal diagnosis is required. This group aims to support all students in developing mental health. It’s led by fellow college students who have received training from the national branch of DBSA.

Dining Services

The WKU Restaurant Group offers a wide variety of dining and Meal Plan options - one will surely fit your wants and needs. Choose from the all-you-care-to-eat Fresh Food Company, many popular National brands, made-to-order foods and two on-campus convenience stores!

National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) 

NAMI is a free support group that meets on alternating Mondays for current WKU students struggling with anxiety, depression, or other mental health issues. It is led by two NAMI-certified facilitators who are in mental health recovery themselves. This group is a supplement — not a substitute — for therapy or medication.Contact Dr. Jay Gabbard at jay.gabbard@wku.edu for more information.

The Pride Center

The mission of the WKU Pride Center is to support all LGBTQ, questioning, and allied students at Western Kentucky University. The Pride Center works to improve the campus climate for all LGBTQ+ students by advocating for the respect and safety of all members of the campus community through events and educational opportunities.

The Department of Student Activities works to provide co-curricular activities for those who want to become involved at Western Kentucky University.  Whether it is a student organizationstudent governmentleadership programs, campus wide programming, Downing Student Union (DSU) activities, or volunteerism programs, there is something for each student who wants to become involved.

WKU Talley Family Counseling Center (TFCC)

The Talley Family Counseling Center provides mental health services free of charge to couples, families, individuals, and groups.

Career Services

The Advising and Career Development Center promotes student success by empowering undergraduate students to take responsibility for achieving their academic, career, and personal goals. The ACDC, in collaboration with both campus and community partners, provides accurate and timely educational resources to ensure students will graduate fully prepared to pursue meaningful careers and lives.

Clinical Educational Complex – Kelly Autism Program, Acquired Brain Injury Resources Program, & Family Resource Center

The Clinical Education Complex at WKU was founded in 2003 and is comprised of the Family Resource Program, the Kelly Autism Program, the Renshaw Early Childhood Center and the Communication Disorders Clinic. Through these programs, the clinic serves hundreds of clients and their families each year, while also serving as a research center for faculty and an academic resource for WKU students who are pursuing related areas of study. 

Intercultural Student Engagement Center (ISEC)

The Cynthia and George Nichols III Intercultural Student Engagement Center (I.S.E.C.) promotes a culturally inclusive campus environment, cultural awareness and competence, inter-group dialog, engagement and intercultural interaction, and supports lifelong learning about self and others.

Student Accessibility and Resource Center (SARC)

The purpose of the SARC is to coordinate services and accommodations for students with documented disabilities. Our most common activities include: reviewing disability documentation, meeting with students to determine appropriate accommodations, and partnering with other areas on campus to implement these accommodations.

Student Support Services (TRiO)

Student Support Services at Western Kentucky University is a federally funded program which provides academic advisement, personal counseling, tutoring and other services designed to help students adjust to campus life, succeed academically and graduate from a post-secondary institution.

 Americans with Disabilities

The Americans with Disabilities Act bans discrimination based on disability and requires employers, businesses and state and local governments to take reasonable steps to accommodate people with disabilities.

Kentucky Career Center

Kentucky Career Center provides unemployment services, veterans services and vocational rehabilitation. 

Kentucky Commission on Deaf and Hard of Hearing (KCDHH)

KCDHH provides information, referral and advocacy services, and an interpreter referral service for state agencies.

Kentucky Assistive Technology Service (KATS) Network

The KATS Network’s mission is to make assistive technology (AT) information, devices, and services easily obtainable for people of any age and/or disability. AT is any item or piece of equipment (both low-tech and high-tech) used to improve and/or maintain independence in the home, at work, school or play.

Kentucky Protection & Advocacy Resources

The Kentucky Protection and Advocacy Resources's mission is to protect and promote the rights of Kentuckians with disabilities through legally based individual and systemic advocacy, and education.

Vocational Rehabilitation

The Office of Vocational Rehabilitation provides Vocational Rehabilitation services to eligible individuals with disabilities to assist with entry or re-entry into employment and productivity in the workplace and community. In order to receive services, an individual must meet eligibility requirements.

Blind & Visually Impaired Services

The Department of Human Services' Division of Rehabilitation Services offers several programs to assist individuals who are blind or visually impaired.  These services include: Vocational Rehabilitation, Independent Living Services, Deaf-Blind Services, Newsline for the Blind and Visually Impaired, and Tennessee Business Enterprises.

Office of Vocational Rehabilitation

The Division of Rehabilitation Services is responsible for the Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) Services program, which includes determination of eligibility,  determination of the nature and scope of VR services and the provision of employment-focused rehabilitation services for individuals with disabilities consistent with their strengths, priorities, and resources.

Tennessee Technology Access Program (TTAP)

The Tennessee Technology Access Program (TTAP) is a statewide program designed to increase access to, and acquisition of, assistive technology devices and services.
