Resources
- U.S. Department of Education provides information for parents about higher education. They also provide information for students with disabilities.
- AHEAD's Open Letter to Parents: By a parent, for parents, this letter is from the Association on Higher Education and Disability (AHEAD). It can provide parents with tips about students with disabilities that are transitioning into a higher education setting.
- The American Psychological Association (APA) provides "A Brief Guide and Frequently Asked Questions for Parents of Students with Disabilities" for parents adjusting to college.
- National Association of the Deaf provides parents some information regarding educational advocacy and support.
- Disability, Opportunities, Internetworking, and Technology (DO-IT) has list of resources for parents and mentors to assist students with disabilities. The list includes DO-IT resources, online resources, and social security information.
- Autism Speaks offers different services and resources for adults with autism and their families. They publish a "Postsecondary Educational Opportunity Guide" for students and their families. In the resource library, they have resources for adults with autism and postsecondary education resources, including scholarship information. They also have a transition toolkit, adult services, and suggested apps.
- Learning Disabilities Association of America has a wide range of information about learning disabilities for parents and professionals. Use the search function to narrow down the information (i.e. search "college").
- LD Online—Parent Tips: LD Online, "the educators' guide to learning disabilities and ADHD," provides parents with educational tips for working with students. LD Online also hosts an array of resources and articles for parents and professionals, which can be found on LD Online's Resources page and LD Online's Topics page.
- National Parent Teacher Association (PTA) offers family resources about student education.
- PACER Centeroffers programs and resources for parents and professionals of children and young adults with disabilities. Also visit PACER's National Parent Center on Transition and Employment webpage.
- The University of North Texas has published information, funded by the U.S. Department of Education, for parents of students with disabilities transitioning to higher education.
- Understood.org is a nonprofit organization that provides information and resources for parents of children and young adults with disabilities, specifically learning and attention issues. The information provided ranges from assisting with social skills to promoting advocacy. Here is one of their articles about college disability services.
