WKU FACULTY MEMBER CO-AUTHORS BOOK ON MEDIA COVERAGE OF GULF COAST DISASTERS
- Friday, April 4th, 2014
Dr. Victoria LaPoe, an assistant professor in WKU’s School of Journalism & Broadcasting, Andrea Miller of Louisiana State University and Shearon Roberts of Tulane University have co-authored Oil and Water: Media Lessons from Hurricane Katrina and the Deepwater Horizon Disaster.
The authors explore the media-fed experiences through visuals and narratives. They examine the process of growth from multiple viewpoints and analyze journalism content in relation to the two disasters. The book assesses the quality of journalism and the effects that quality may have on the public.
Oil and Water argues that regardless of the type of journalism involved or the immensity of the events covered, successful reporting still depends on the fundamentals of journalism.
“When I was working on this research, my hope was to create a text that both professionals and researchers could use to discuss how to effectively cover a crisis before the next disaster,” Dr. LaPoe said.
The book will be available in print as well as online through University Press of Mississippi.

The School of Media & Communication at WKU is ACEJMC accredited for majors in Broadcasting, Journalism and Visual Journalism & Photography.
