Fellowships
Thanks to the generosity of donors, WKU Student Publications sponsors paid fellowships each summer in partnership with media companies throughout the region. To qualify, a student must be a current staff member who will return to WKU as a full-time student in the fall and will commit to working at Student Publications during the following fall semester. Our 11 fellowships for Summer 2022:
Paul and Ellen Schuhmann Fellowship at the Courier Journal
A 12-week internship in the newsroom at the Courier Journal in Louisville, paying $3,600. Supported by a scholarship endowment created by alumnus Paul Schuhmann in honor of his late wife.
College Heights Herald Endowment Fellowship at Louisville Public Media
A 12-week internship with Louisville Public Media working with the Kentucky Center for Investigative Reporting and WFPL, the National Public Radio affiliate, paying $4,200. There is a high interest in candidates with visual storytelling and/or podcast skills as well as strong reporting skills.
Tom Caudill and Charles Mason Ralph Fellowships at the Lexington Herald-Leader
Two 10-week internships in the newsroom at the Lexington Herald-Leader, paying $3,500. Supported by endowments created by alumnus Tom Caudill, retired managing editor of the Herald-Leader, and the late Charles Mason Ralph.
Charles Mason Ralph Fellowship at the Messenger-Inquirer
A 10-week internship in the newsroom at the Messenger-Inquirer in Owensboro, paying $3,500 and sponsored by an endowment created by the late Charles Mason Ralph, a former Herald staffer and Owensboro native.
Carla and Chad Carlton Fellowship at C2 Strategic Communications
A 10-week internship at C2 Strategic Communications, a public relations, marketing and communications firm in Louisville owned by alumnus Chad Carlton, paying $3,500. There is a strong interest in candidates who want to pursue careers in PR and marketing.
Charles Mason Ralph Fellowship at The Charlotte Observer
A 10-week internship at The Charlotte Observer in North Carolina, paying $3,500.
Judy Wildman Hughes Fellowship at the Bowling Green Daily News
A 10-week internship in the newsroom at the Bowling Green Daily News, paying $3,500 and sponsored by a gift from Brad Hughes honoring Judy Wildman Hughes.
Charles Mason Ralph Fellowship at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch
A 10-week internship on the digital desk of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch in Missouri, paying $3,500.
Magazine Fellowship at Evansville Living/Tucker Publishing
A 10-week internship at Evansville Living and Tucker Publishing in Indiana, paying $3,500.
Summer Internship at WKU Student Publications
A 10-week supervised internship at WKU Student Publications, primarily covering news for the WKUHerald.com and keeping the website lively, but also reporting and writing for other products, and paying $3,500.
