WKU Student Publications has awarded $56,750 in Summer 2022 fellowships at professional organizations and scholarships for the 2022-23 academic year.

The direct help for the students -- $39,300 in stipends for expenses during the summer fellowships and $17,450 in academic scholarships – is all thanks to the generosity of alumni, friends and partners of Talisman magazine, the College Heights Herald news organization, Cherry Creative branded-content studio and Student Publications Advertising.

“The Student Publications family is passionate about the success of our students in our four student-led areas, and our scholarships and fellowships are among the most tangible proof of the support our alumni, friends and partners show for our students,” said Chuck Clark, director of WKU Student Publications. “Our fellowships are among the best things we do to help our students grow essential skills that land jobs when they graduate, and our scholarships provide invaluable resources helping our students to meet the cost of their higher education.

“We’re enormously grateful to the Student Pubs family for that important commitment and deep generosity.”

Scholarships are funded through 12 endowments housed in the College Heights Foundation that generate scholarship funds reserved for students working at WKU Student Publications. Scholarships awarded for the 2022-23 academic year are:

Robert R. Adams Journalism Scholarship

•   Debra Murray, a rising junior from Louisville, $1,400.

Bryan Leigh Armstrong Memorial Scholarship

• Madison Carter, a senior from Shepherdsville, $400.

James D. Ausenbaugh Scholarship

• Jolie Finley, a senior from Bowling Green, $650.

Donald E. Collins Scholarship

• J.T. Steele, a rising junior from Bloomfield, $1,800.
• Arthur Trickett-Wile, a post-baccalaureate student from San Antonio, Texas, $1,000.

Michael P. Collins Memorial Scholarship

• Veronica Teeter, a rising senior from Carmel, Indiana, $400.

Judith Koch Ecker Memorial Scholarship

• Ragan Harrington, a rising sophomore from Nashville, $500.

Miss Frances Richards Scholarship

• Alexandra Hendricks, a rising senior from New Windsor, New York, $1,400.
• Damon Stone, a rising junior from Scottsville, $400.

Paul and Ellen Schuhmann Student Publications Scholarship

• Cristina Betz, a rising senior from Rosell, Georgia, $2,500.
• Michael Crimmins, a rising junior from Glasgow, $2,500.
• Michael J. Collins, a rising senior from Finchville, $1,000.

Lowell L. and Opal F. Valentine Scholarship

• Tucker Covey, a junior from Woodstock, Georgia, $1,400.

Elliott Wells Memorial Scholarship

• Camden Bush, a rising sophomore from Lexington, $400.

David B. Whitaker Scholarship

• Alaina Scott, a senior from Louisville, $1,400.

Red O’Donnell Scholarship and Outstanding Continuing Student Award

• Charles “Jake” Moore, a rising senior from Louisville, $500.

Fellowships – summer internships at professional organizations that partner with us – are funded by individual donations to the Student Publications Fellowship Fund and by special funds established by alumni for specific internships. Stipends were awarded for a record 11 fellowships in summer Summer 2022:

Charles Mason Ralph Endowment Fellowships

• At the Messenger-Inquirer in Owensboro, Kentucky: Michael Crimmins, a rising junior journalism major from Glasgow, Kentucky.
• At the Lexington Herald-Leader: Leah Hunter, a rising junior journalism major from Nashville.
• At The Charlotte Observer in North Carolina: Arthur Trickett-Wile, a post-baccalaureate photojournalism major from San Antonio, Texas.
• At the St. Louis Post-Dispatch in Missouri: Alexandra Hendricks, a rising senior photojournalism major from New Windsor, New York.

Paul and Ellen Schuhmann Fellowship

• At The Courier Journal in Louisville: Genesis Malone, a rising senior journalism major from Louisville.

Tom Caudill Fellowship

• At the Lexington Herald-Leader: Jacob Latimer, a rising junior from Henderson, Kentucky.

Herald Endowment Fellowship

• At Louisville Public Media and the Kentucky Center for Investigative Reporting: Michael J. Collins, a rising senior journalism major from Finchville, Kentucky.

Judy Wildman Hughes Fellowship

• At the Bowling Green Daily News: Charles “Jake” Moore, a rising senior journalism major from Louisville.

Carla and Chad Carlton Fellowship

• At C2 Strategic Communications in Louisville: Alaina Scott, a senior public relations from Louisville.

Talisman Magazine Fellowship

• At Evansville Living and Tucker Publishing: Bailey Brush, a sophomore visual arts major from Evansville, Indiana.

Dr. Barbara Burch Fellowship

• At the College Heights Herald: Makaio Smith, a rising sophomore journalism major from Louisville.

WKU Student Publications and its four divisions – Talisman magazine, College Heights Herald news organization, Cherry Creative branded-content studio and Student Publications Advertising sales team – make up one of the most honored student media groups in the country.

Together, our outlets have won 41 national Pacemaker awards, the highest honor in student media – 21 for Talisman, 19 for the Herald and 1 for Cherry Creative. Both the Herald and the Talisman are in the Associated Collegiate Press Hall of Fame, and both last year were named to The Pacemaker 100, the 100 most successful operations in college media.
