¿Este país es todo lo que se imaginó?
Yo vine con una idea de una América libre ... donde puedes expresar tus opiniones, donde tu trabajo no depende solo del gobierno, ni de lo político; donde hay oportunidades de educación y trabajo para todos. La mayor parte de lo que yo pensé antes de conocer América es real, por ejemplo tienen muy buenas políticas públicas, sin decir que sean perfectas, son muy buenas aunque creo que los últimos años este concepto se ha desdibujado un poco por los hechos que han sucedido a nivel nacional. Este es un país bendecido enormemente, Yo me siento muy contenta de vivir aquí aun con los problemas que Ustedes tienen, este es un país donde se puede vivir tranquilo y trabajar para progresar, acercarse a la tecnología, al desarrollo, ver el mundo con un horizonte más amplio. Sabemos que todos los países tienen problemas, pero hay países con más y más graves problemas que ustedes aquí en América. A mí me encanta por ejemplo que Ustedes, los americanos, han logrado cosas como llegar a la luna por dar un solo un ejemplo. Mucha gente en otros lugares podría decir “no, es muy difícil no lo podemos lograr”... Ustedes hacen grandes equipos y luchan por su objetivo y lo logran, esto es parte de su cultura. Muchos americanos se creen superiores a todo el mundo, pero, de pronto lo son, al menos en algunas esferas de la sociedad. Me encanta que ustedes cuando quieren conseguir algo,... luchan, persisten y lo logran.
Con este concepto de trabajo duro, ¿piensa que hay una conexión con la situación de inmigración hoy en día en los Estados Unidos?
Mira, la situación de inmigración de este país es un problema con muchísimas aristas, no es tan simple como decir está bien o está mal. Yo particularmente pienso que su gobierno debe reformar y actualizar su sistema de inmigración, Hay programas que ustedes mismos crearon y que trajeron a este país miles de inmigrantes legales, que luego trajeron sus familias etc. Hay mucha ligereza en abordar este tema, es muy, muy complejo. Miren, por ejemplo, yo soy una inmigrante legal. Seguí todas las reglas impuestas por sus leyes antes de ser residente permanente, fue un camino largo y difícil, no pude trabajar durante nueve años, solo hasta que como residente la ley me permitió trabajar. En cambio, personas inmigrantes ilegales viene,, trabajan, obtienen beneficios de su sistema usando papeles falsos, no estoy de acuerdo con esto. Uno debe respetar las reglas y las leyes del país anfitrión, del país que lo recibe a uno.
Mi familia gasto mucho dinero en todo este tiempo donde solo estaba el ingreso de mi esposo, había personas que me decían “deberías trabajar con papeles falsos, es muy barato hacerlo,” pero esto es cuestión de rectitud y conciencia; no estuve y no estoy de acuerdo con eso. Ahora hay casos en que los inmigrantes realmente necesitan de una ayuda humanitaria. Ellos vienen huyendo de la pobreza extrema, de la violencia. Pero otras personas inmigrantes vienen solo por el sueño americano, ambición de dinero y bienes materiales “No matter what” … voy a hacer dinero. Esto alimenta grupos de comerciantes de personas como los coyotes, y muchos padres traen a sus niños y los someten a todas estos riesgos, no es justo. Esto rompe las leyes del país. Definitivamente, no estoy de acuerdo con eso.
¿Cuál es su opinión de los derechos humanos en la inmigración y también de la medicina en general?
Sobre los derechos humanos creo firmemente que todo ser humano hombre o mujer o niño, debe ser respetado y debe ser el centro de las políticas públicas y de las leyes, es decir las leyes se hacen para ordenar la sociedad, para proteger al individuo. Creo en Dios y creo que somos su obra predilecta; digamos que el centro es el hombre. Por eso, yo respeto la vida desde que se genera hasta que se muere. Estoy absolutamente en contra del aborto, estoy a favor del control natal, si no quieres hijos cuídate, si un bebe viene en camino, asúmelo con responsabilidad, claro que como en todo hay excepciones, estos temas que hemos tratado no se pueden resumir en una hora de charla son muy profundos y complejos.
No he pensado como feminista, he pensado como médica, particularmente no me gusta el feminismo porque el hombre y la mujer nunca podrían ser iguales, somos iguales en dignidad. No somos iguales ni física, ni emocional, ni fisiológicamente. No somos iguales, somos complementarios – esa es mi opinión muy personal.
Is this country all that you imagined?
I came with an idea of a free America… where you can express your opinions, where it doesn’t depend on your government or political work, where there are opportunities of education and work. Most of what I thought is real, although I think that the last few years have distorted that a little. This is an enormously blessed country. I am very happy to live here, even with the problems that you all have. This is a country where you can live in peace and work to improve, where you can access technology, development, and see the world with broader horizons. We know that all countries have problems, but there are countries with much graver problems than you have here in the United States. I love, for example, that the Americans have achieved things like going to the moon for the sole reason of giving a example. Many people could say “No it is very difficult, we cannot do it”... You all form great teams and fight for your goal and achieve it, this is a part of your culture. Many Americans believe that they are superior to all of the world, but as of now, they are. I love that you all, when you want to achieve something, fight, persist and achieve it.
With the concept of hard work, do you think that there is a connection with the situation of immigration today in the United States?
The situation of immigration in this country is a problem with many sides; it isn’t as simple to say “it’s good” or “it’s bad”. I particularly think that the system should be reformed and should be adjusted. There are programs that you all have created that have brought in thousands of legal immigrants, who later brought their families, etc. There is much tact needed to address this topic, as it is very, very complicated. For example, I am a legal immigrant. I followed all the rules and regulations of your laws before becoming a permanent resident. It was a long and difficult road. I could not work for nine years- until I became a permanent resident. On the other hand, there are illegal immigrants that come, work and obtain benefits from your system using false paperwork - I do not agree with this. One should respect the rules and laws of the new country, the one that received you. My family spent a lot of money during those years when all we had was my husband’s salary. There were people that told me, “You should work with false documentation, it is very cheap to do it,” but this is a question of integrity and conscience - I did not, and I do not agree with this. Now, there are cases where immigrants are truly in need of humanitarian aid. They come fleeing from extreme poverty, or violence. But, other immigrants come only for the American dream with ambition for money and good material things - “No matter what”... I am going to make money. This feeds groups of business like coyotes and many parents bring their children and submit them to these risks, it’s not just. This breaks the laws of this country. I definitely do not agree with this.
What is your opinion of human rights to immigration and also of medicine in general?
As for human rights, I believe firmly that every human being - man, woman or child - should be respected, and should be the center of public politics and laws. That is to say, the laws should be made to give order to society and to protect the individual. I believe in God, and I believe that we are his favorite work; one could say that the center of life is man. Because of this, I respect life until it dies. I am absolutely against abortion, I support contraceptives. If you do not want a baby - take care of yourself. If a baby comes, take it on responsibly. Obviously, as with everything, there are exceptions. These topics that we have covered can not be summarized in an hour of chatting. They are very deep and complex.
I have not thought as a feminist, I have thought as a doctor. I particularly do not like feminism, because men and women could never be equal. We are equal in dignity, but we are not equal physically, emotionally or physiologically. We are not equal, we are complementary - this is my personal opinion.
