Alex Acosta

Alex Acosta nació en El Salvador y ha vivido en los EE.UU. por 15 años. Durante estos años él se ha dedicado a la construcción de interiores y exteriores y ha invertido miles y miles de dólares para conseguir los documentos legales para poder seguir viviendo y trabajando en este país.

Alex Acosta was born in El Salvador and has lived in the U.S. for 15 years. In that time, he has worked in interior and exterior construction and has invested thousands upon thousands of dollars in his pursuit of legal documentation to continue to live and work in this country.

Ana Camarena y Miguel Franco

Miguel y Ana viven en una casa blanca con puerta amarilla al sur de Bowling Green, KY. Entramos a su casa y nos dieron la bienvenida de forma muy amable, con una sonrisa y un cafecito. Se agarraban de la mano mientras contaban cómo vinieron a los Estados Unidos desde México. Ana se tocó su barriga y con emoción nos contó que el bebé habría nacido en junio y que le llamarían Miguel.

Miguel and Ana live in a white house with a yellow door outside of Bowling Green, KY. We entered their house, and they welcomed us kindly with a smile and coffee. They held hands as they told us how they came to the U.S. from Mexico. Ana touched her belly and happily told us they'd have a baby and that they'd call him Miguel.

Dra. Mónica Chamorro

La Doctora Mónica Chamarro nació en Colombia. Ahí estudió su licenciatura e hizo la carrera de medicina donde se especializó en dermatología. Posteriormente, viajó a México donde realizó su sub-especialización en dermatología pediátrica, ejerció su profesión durante 6 años y se casó. Por los estudios y el trabajo de su esposo, Alan Arenas, Ingeniero metalúrgico, se mudaron hace cinco años a los Estados Unidos, primero a Pittsburgh, PA, y, luego, a Bowling Green, KY. Tiene dos hijas, la primera, María Juliana, nacida en México, y la segunda, Ana, nacida en los Estados Unidos.  En los últimos dos años, la Doctora Chamorro ha pasado estudiando y tomando los distintos exámenes para revalidar su título como médica y poder ejercer su profesión en Estados Unidos.

Dr. Mónica Chamorro was born in Colombia. There, she studied for her undergraduate degree and completed medical school, where she specialized in dermatology. Later, she traveled to Mexico, where she completed further training to specialize in pediatric dermatology, worked for six years and got married. Due to the studies of her husband, Alan Arenas, they moved to the US five years ago – first to Pittsburgh, PA, and then, later to Bowling Green, KY, due to his career as a metallurgic engineer. They have two daughters: María Juliana, who was born in Mexico, and Ana, who was born in the U.S. Dr. Chamorro has spent the past two years studying and taking the required exams in order to revalidate her medical degree and to be able to practice in the United States.

Gloria Rivera

Gloria Rivera es de San Luis Potosí, México. Vino de 17 años a los Estados Unidos porque se casó con Víctor Puga, de origen mexicano y de residencia estadounidense y juntos tienen tres hijos.  Ella ha trabajado en el GEO Center con la comunidad de inmigrantes y refugiados y tenía un mini-mercado hispano en Bowling Green, KY. En la actualidad, ella estudia negocios en Southcentral Community & Technical College y trabaja con su esposo en su empresa de techos para construcción comercial, Premiere Roofing LLC.

Gloria Rivera is from San Luis Potosí, Mexico. She moved to the U.S. 17 years ago after marrying Victor Puga, and together they have three children. She has worked for the GEO center with the immigrant and refugee community, and she had a hispanic mini-market in Bowling Green, KY. Currently, she is studying business at Southcentral Kentucky Community and Technical College and works for her husband’s roofing company, Premiere Roofing LLC.

Guillermo Castillo

Guillermo Castillo es un activista, columnista y analista político que llegó a los Estados Unidos en 2016 y es un solicitante de asilo político afirmativo originario de Guatemala. Ahora, él trabaja en asistencia migratoria en Kentucky. En su tiempo libre sensibiliza a las Diásporas Centroamericanas sobre la “Estrategia de Estados Unidos para Centro América1”, “BUILD Act2” para fortalecer el Estado de Derecho y generar buena gobernanza, seguridad y justicia en lugares de alta migración en Guatemala, El Salvador y Honduras.

Guillermo Castillo is an activist, journalist and political analyst that moved to the U.S. in 2016 as a political refugee from Guatemala. Now, he works in immigration assistance in Kentucky. In his free time, he works to inform the Central American public about the “United States’ Strategy for Central America,” “BUILD Act2” in order to strengthen the rule of law and generate good government, security, and justice in areas of high migration in Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras.

Julia Rivas

Julia Rivas es de El Salvador e inmigró a los 13 años de edad a Nueva Jersey y, luego, a Bowling Green, KY. Su familia decidió inmigrar debido a que las pandillas chantajeaban a su padre. Pese a que su padre era un micro-empresario y su familia tenía una situación cómoda económicamente, sus padres optaron por inmigrar para brindarle seguridad y bienestar a su familia. Ahora, Julia está casada con Carlos Rivas, quien trabaja en la construcción, y con quien tiene dos hijos: Mateo y Julieta. Julia completó su licenciatura y su maestría en los estudios interdisciplinarios con énfasis en organización y comunicación de ideas en WKU. Ella ha trabajado en diversas instituciones en los áreas de inglés como segunda lengua y proyectos comunitarios, y ha trabajado con la población inmigrante. En la actualidad, se desempeña en WKU, como coordinadora para el reclutamiento de maestros que son minorías.

Julia Rivas is from El Salvador and immigrated to the U.S. when she was 13 years old, moving first to New Jersey and then to Bowling Green, KY. Her parents decided to immigrate due to the blackmail her father was receiving from the local gangs. Despite the fact her father was a business owner and her family was economically comfortable in El Salvador, they opted for the family's security and well-being, immigrating to the U.S. Now, Julia is married to Carlos Rivas, who works in construction and with whom she has two children: Mateo and Julieta. She completed her bachelor's and master's degrees in interdisciplinary studies with an emphasis in organization and communication of ideas at WKU. She has worked for diverse institutions within the areas of English as a second language or community service and has worked with the immigrant population. Currently, she works as the coordinator of minority teacher recruitment at WKU.

Leyda Becker

Leyda Becker nació en Venezuela, de padre venezolano y de madre iraní. Sus padres se conocieron cuando estudiaban en WKU. Al divorciarse sus padres, su madre regresó a Bowling Green, KY, donde creció Leyda y sus dos hermanos. Luego de terminar sus estudios de colegio, Leyda hizo una licenciatura en comunicaciones en WKU, donde conoció a su esposo, Brian Becker, director de educación adulta en Southcentral Kentucky Community and Technical College, con el cual tiene dos hijos, Ladrian que tiene 11 años y Kalina que tiene 8 años.  En la actualidad, Leyda se desempeña como coordinadora internacional para la ciudad de Bowling Green.

Leyda Becker was born in Venezuela to a Venezuelan father and an Iranian mother who met while studying in WKU. After they divorced, her mother returned to Bowling Green, KY, where Leyda and her two brothers grew up. After completing high school, Leyda obtained her bachelor’s degree in communications from WKU, where she met her husband, Brian Becker, who now works as the director of adult education in Southcentral Kentucky Community and Technical College. Together, they have two children: Ladrian, 11, and Kalina, 8. Currently, Ledya works as the international coordinator for the city of Bowling Green.

María Inés Casana

María Inés es de Perú y vino a los Estados Unidos en 2008, debido a que se casó. Su esposo es de Perú también, pero él vino a los Estados Unidos cuando tenía 12 años y se conocieron en un viaje hizo él a Perú. La pareja trabaja en Fruit of the Loom y tienen dos hijos.

María Inés, who is from Peru, came to the U.S. in 2008 because of her husband of 21 years. Her husband is from Peru too, but he came to the U.S. when he was 12 years old. They met during a trip he made to Peru. The couple work at Fruit of the Loom and have two children.

 

María Inés Guerrero Rodríguez

 

María Inés Guerrero Rodríguez es una mujer colombiana. Vivió en Colombia, su país natal, la mayor parte de su vida y llegó a Estados Unidos hace 14 años. Ella y su familia abandonaron su país natal por razones de tipo político y de seguridad que en ese momento vivía su familia. Ella y su esposo querían para sus hijos un país con mejores condiciones de vida donde pudieran crecer y tener un buen futuro. Cuando vivía en Colombia ella ejercía su profesión como médica de familia, ahora en Estados Unidos trabaja como CNA  auxiliar de enfermería.

María Inés Guerrero Rodríguez is from Colombia, where she has lived most of her life. She arrived in the U.S. 14 years ago. She and her family left the country due to the lack of security they faced as well as for political reasons. She and her husband wanted a better quality of life for their children; a life where they could grow up and have a good future. When she lived in Colombia, she was a doctor practicing family medicine. Here in the U.S., she works as a certified nurse's assistant.
