Dr. Douglas Humphrey Award for Outstanding Service*
Awarded to the junior or senior student with a record of service within the department and to science outreach to the community.
James R. Pierce and Zachary C. Thomas
James Pierce and Zach Thomas are co-recipients of the Doug Humphrey service award because of their longstanding good citizenship in supporting a range of faculty and student activities in the department. Zach and James presently serve as president and vice-president respectively of the WKU Chapter of the Society of Physics Students, where they have helped to build the membership and camaraderie of the organization by promoting and supporting physics among the student body. Both of these young men set outstanding examples by volunteering to assist the department outreach mission with events such as Physics Olympics and the Science Olympiad. Both have also visited area schools to show students a variety of physics demos in an effort to promote interest in science. In addition, both have been instrumental in coordinating the student organizations in Ogden College to establish a tradition of hosting a Geek Week to promote an interdisciplinary community among the science students in the college.
* Award made through the efforts of the College Heights Foundation.
