Greenview Shadowing Program
South Central KY AHEC partners with Greenview Regional Hospital to provide a shadowing rotation for WKU students.
Students spend eight weeks rotating hospital departments, shadowing a variety of healthcare providers. Students spend three hours shadowing each week.
Students who have been accepted to participate must:
- Commit to all eight shadowing days
- Pass a criminal background check
- Pass a drug screen*
Provide a negative TB skin test* - Provide immunization records
- Provide current flu vaccine (not required for summer cohort)
- Attend an online orientation
*Students must pay for their TB skin test and drug test.
Selected students will spend three hours shadowing per week for eight weeks. Students will shadow in a different hospital department each week. Below is a list of areas currently open for clinical observations.

- Telemetry
- 5th Floor
- Endoscopy Tech.
- Scrub Tech.
- Cardiac Cath. Lab
- Radiology
- Respiratory Therapy
- Laboratory
- Clinical Dietician
- Rehab Services
- House Supervisor

Due to Greenview Hospital capacity, this program is limited to 15 students in the fall, spring, and summer cohorts. The winter cohort is limited to five participants. Students not selected for the fall cohort are strongly encouraged to reapply for subsequent cohorts.
August 19: Application opens
August 28: Application closes (noon)
September 9: Orientation
September 16-November 22: Shadowing rotations
December 5: Anticipated application open date
February 5 - April 5: Tentative shadowing rotations

Q: Will I always shadow a doctor?
A: No, you will shadow a variety of healthcare providers. We strongly believe that shadowing a variety of health professionals will be beneficial to you.
Q: Do I get to assist with procedures?
A: No, you are not allowed to assist with any procedures. You are only there to observe.
Q: What do I do if the department I am supposed to shadow doesn’t have any procedures today?
A: This happens occasionally, especially with Friday and afternoon shifts. If this does happen, ask if there is someone else in the department you could shadow or if you can shadow in a different department.
Q: Do I need to wear scrubs?
A: No, you will not wear scrubs for this program. Participants must dress in business casual attire and wear closed-toe shoes.
