Deborah Logan to present lecture on Fulbright work
- WKU English Department
- Monday, March 18th, 2019
Dr. Deborah Logan, professor in Department of English, will present “Pandal-hopping in the City of Joy: Being a Fulbrighter in Kolkata” at 4 p.m. April 4 in the Faculty House as part of WKU’s celebration of Fulbright Week.
Dr. Logan will share some of her experiences living and researching in Kolkata, West Bengal. “Pandal-hopping in the City of Joy” will offer insights from a visiting scholar’s perspective on public religious celebrations during a holiday season shared by Muslims, Hindus and Christians. From the humblest tree-shrine to the most elaborate Pandals, religious expression in India is a visual feast, especially as seen through foreign eyes.
Dr. Logan earned a Fulbright-Nehru Research Fellowship to study in India in fall 2018; she previously earned a Fulbright to India in 2012, which produced the monograph, the Indian Ladies’ Magazine: From Raj to Swaraj, published in 2017. During the 2018 fellowship, Dr. Logan conducted research for a monograph study entitled The Women’s Press in India, 1860-1940: Imperial Imports and Nationalist Activism. She examines how women writers in India developed their own voices in the context of Indian nationalist and independence movements.
While on sabbatical, Dr. Logan’s anthology The Life Literary: Indian Women's Pre-independence Writing, was accepted for publication by Jadavpur University Press, Kolkata. Anticipated publication is 2020. The book features collected literature—poetry, fiction, serials, drama, nonfiction—from the Indian Ladies' Magazine, 1901-1938.
Dr. Logan is one of the most prolific scholars at WKU, noted for her scholarship on and editorial work of Victorian writer Harriet Martineau. Dr. Logan has also published monographs on Victorian sexuality, British imperialism and a literary-biography on Harriet Martineau. She has written numerous articles related to these topics and others in Victorian literature and culture. Additionally, Dr. Logan is the editor of Victorians: A Journal of Culture and Literature, a 65-year-old scholarly journal sponsored by WKU and Ohio State.
Dr. Logan’s talk is co-sponsored by the English Department, Office of International Programs and Office of Research and Creative Activity.
