A dedicated explorer, he revels in the excitement of uncovering new destinations. Beyond the world of theorems, Zulfiqur finds solace in the pixelated realms in culinary arts, displaying a passion for cooking. His academic odyssey at WKU has shaped a profound fascination for Control Theory, showcasing a dynamic synergy of theoretical prowess and real-world applications. Eager to unravel the mysteries of Mathematics, Zulfiqur aspires to carve a niche in the academic realm, aiming to be a luminary in the evolving landscape of mathematical discoveries.

Rachel Vargas

Rachel Vargas
Outstanding MA Graduate Student Award

Rachel Vargas, a 2019 WKU graduate, holds certification to teach mathematics in grades 5-12. She completed her M.A. in Mathematics program in 2023. Since earning her Bachelor’s degree, Rachel has been dedicated to her role as a mathematics teacher at Logan County High School. She remains connected to her alma mater through the WKU Mathematics and SKyTeach programs, actively participating in and leading professional developments, and hosting SKyTeach pre-service teachers in her classroom. Rachel expresses her gratitude to her M.A. professors, Dr. Fortune and Dr. Marchionda, for their unwavering support throughout her Master’s program.

 

Brian Nguyen

Brian Nguyen is a graduating senior at WKU, majoring in Mathematics with a minor in Computer Science. Throughout his time at WKU, Brian has actively engaged in research under the mentorship of Dr. Lanphier and Dr. Schugart. His academic interests primarily revolve around analysis and number theory, where he has demonstrated a keen intellect and dedication. Additionally, Brian is a proud Gatton alumnus, belonging to the class of 2023. His achievements and contributions to the academic community reflect his passion for learning and his commitment to excellence.

Jacob Moers aspires to become a high school math teacher, with the goal of making mathematics accessible and enjoyable for all students.

 

Dawson Knight

Dawson Knight
Outstanding Middle Grades Mathematics Education Award

Dawson Knight, a fourth-year senior at Western Kentucky University, is dedicated to his major in Middle Grade Mathematics Education. Hailing from Simpson County, Dawson’s passion for teaching and mathematics blossomed during his formative years. As he approaches graduation, Dawson envisions returning to his Alma Mater, Simpson County Schools, to impart his knowledge and passion as a math teacher to the community that shaped him. He is deeply committed to nurturing young minds and instilling a love for learning. Dawson’s ultimate goal is to embark on a fulfilling career devoted to inspiring and guiding future generations.

Zoe Brown

Throughout her high school years, Zoe Brown pursued homeschooling and uncovered her passion for mathematics through self-guided exploration and reading. Following the completion of high school, she attended Somerset Community College, where she graduated in Spring 2023 with an Associate’s degree in Computer Information Technology. Zoe realized she missed delving into the intricacies of mathematics. Motivated by her love for the subject, she has chosen to dig deeper into Mathematics at WKU.

 

Jeremiah Diaz

The Robert C. Bueker Mathematics Award

Jeremiah Diaz is a freshman at WKU, embarking on an academic journey with a double major in Mathematics and Math and Science Education, along with a minor in Music. He is actively engaged in Western’s SkyTeach program, pursuing certification to teach secondary mathematics. Jeremiah also contributes his talents to the marching band at WKU. With aspirations to return to his alma mater as a teacher, Jeremiah is eager to make a difference in the lives of future students. He is enthusiastic about the opportunities that WKU’s mathematics program offers and looks forward to exploring the possibilities that lie ahead.

Sarah Hartman

Sarah Hartman is currently a graduate student in the mathematics program, specializing in Analysis and Discrete Systems. Her thesis work focuses on applied statistics and environmental health sciences. Post-graduation, Sarah intends to pursue a career in mathematics education.

 

Arion Ford

Arion Ford
Fruit of the Loom (Undergraduate Student)

Arion Ford, a junior at WKU, originates from Louisville, Kentucky. Pursuing his studies in Mathematics, Arion has discovered a welcoming academic environment at WKU, providing just the right balance of proximity and distance from home. As a first-generation college student, Arion faces and embraces the unique challenges that come with his background. He finds inspiration and support from various campus organizations such as the Intercultural Student Engagement Center, Why Knot Us, and Trio Student Support Services. Arion’s experiences at WKU reinforce his dedication to not only achieving a degree in Mathematics but also serving as a role model for his younger brothers. His utmost priority is attaining a degree showcasing to his three younger siblings that they too can achieve academic success.

Justin Vila

Pi Mu Epsilon Award

Justin Vila, a Nashville, Tennessee native, is currently in his second year of college. Driven by a deep-seated passion for mathematics and problem-solving, he has chosen a major deeply rooted in mathematical principles. Justin finds joy in strategy games, continuous learning, and staying physically active. His philosophy revolves around self-improvement and the pursuit of becoming a better version of himself each day, whether it be in physical or mental aspects. Outside of academic pursuits, Justin values quality time spent with friends and loved ones. He prioritizes meaningful connections over quantity, believing that genuine relationships are essential in shaping one’s identity and contributing to personal growth.
