MAY 19 REPORT: WKU professor John All was injured Monday (May 19) when he fell down a 70-foot crevasse on Mount Himlung in the Himalayas.

According to his updates on the American Climber Science Program’s Facebook page, Dr. All’s injuries include a broken arm, broken ribs and internal bleeding. Dr. All was able to make it out of the crevasse and crawled back to his tent where he is awaiting a rescue team. Weather permitting, a Global Rescue helicopter is scheduled for 6:30 a.m. Tuesday (7:45 p.m. Monday in Bowling Green) to reach Dr. All at Camp 2 on Himlung and take him to Norvic International Hospital in Kathmandu.

“John All is one of our leading scientists, particularly in climate change,” WKU President Gary Ransdell said. “We are praying for a successful rescue and a full and speedy recovery and look forward to giving him a warm welcome back to campus.”

Dr. All, associate professor in WKU’s Department of Geography and Geology, is director of the American Climber Science Program, which is a research and conservation program of the American Alpine Club.

After a deadly avalanche last month shut down the 2014 climbing season on Mount Everest, Dr. All and his expedition moved to Mount Himlung to continue their climate research.
