WKU’s Habitat for Humanity campus chapter will be sending two volunteer groups to North Carolina and Arkansas for spring break trips March 9-14.

The WKU groups will travel to Burlington, North Carolina, and Benton, Arkansas, to assist local Habitat for Humanity Affiliates with various projects as part of Habitat’s Collegiate Challenge.

Collegiate Challenge is an alternative break trip program run through Habitat for Humanity’s Youth Programs and volunteer mobilization department. The program offers students an opportunity to volunteer with Habitat for Humanity affiliates from across the country during breaks in their academic year.

The program works to build houses and hope in communities. Students learn a great deal about building, issues of substandard housing, working and living within a community, cultural differences in different parts of the country and most of all themselves as a result of the program.

Group members heading to Arkansas will be working on framing of a home and assisting in the Affiliates ReStore where gently used merchandise is sold to the public with funding assisting the Habitat affiliate in that area.

Arkansas: Bryan Reaka, faculty member, WKU Department of Architectural and Manufacturing Sciences; Lindsay Blankenship, a junior construction management major from Troy, Ohio; Alexus Smith, a freshman film major from Forest Park, Illinois; Adeleke Ademuyewo, a sophomore construction management major from Cincinnati, Ohio; Jennifer Blair, a junior construction management major from Russell Springs; and Todd Kessler, a freshman advanced manufacturing major from Bowling Green.

North Carolina: Lydia Ramsey, a junior architectural science major from Bowling Green; Jason Klein, a senior construction management and civil engineering major from Russellville; Garrett Haug, a senior architectural science major from Bowling Green; Kasey Coke-Murphy, a junior elementary education major from Louisville; Kijana Beauchamp, a sophomore sports management major from Louisville; Carlos Zavaleta, a sophomore computer science major from Nashville, Tennessee; and Kolton Jones, a senior physics major from Bowling Green.
