- Friday, May 22nd, 2015
Parker Bennett Curry Elementary School will break ground on a new Natural Playscape on Friday, May 22, 2015 at 9:00 a.m. The playscape will be located on school grounds in proximity to the other play grounds of the school.
The school has been working in collaboration with faculty and students of the Department of Architectural and Manufacturing Sciences (AMS) at Western Kentucky (WKU) University in the research and design of the playscape which was supported by a $2000 Community Partnership incentive award from the WKU Alive Center.
PBC is also working with the AMS faculty to secure grants for the construction of the playscape. An integral part of the playscape is an edible planting garden for which a grant of $2000 has been received from the Whole Kids Foundation. Construction of the planter beds will begin and be completed during the summer of 2015. By the start of the new academic year the school intends to have students working and learning from the planting process. A faculty member from the Department of Agriculture at WKU will advise and assist in this endeavor.
During the next academic year the school will be applying for grants as well as working with volunteers to have the playscape ready in phases over the year.
