Department of English Undergraduate Awards and Scholarships


We are excited to announce that we are extending our scholarship awards to all the undergraduate class levels!
 
The previous requirement for completing English 100, 200, and 300 along with two major English classes to qualify for some of the departmental scholarships has been eliminated.
 
We look forward to awarding all levels of undergraduate English majors in the Spring 2025 semester.

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. If you need to exit the application and return to it later, copy the URL of the page you are working on and paste it into a saved note somewhere before exiting the page. When you are ready to resume the application, copy and paste the URL into the same browser that you used before.

2. Once you submit an application, you CANNOT return to it or submit a second application.

3.  Applications with any missing information will not be considered.

4.  At the end of this application in the space provided, present your written work according to the prompt associated with the scholarship(s) you are applying for.

5.  Students who are already receiving Presidential Scholarships are not eligible for departmental scholarships.

6.  The updated and revised deadline for consideration of this application is Wednesday, January 1, 2025.
 
7. In addition to the English Department's scholarship application located at the link on this page, students will also need to complete WKU's TopDollar scholarship application by Wednesday January 1, 2025 to be considered for any and all scholarships.

Prerequisites

FIRST YEAR CREATIVE WRITING/ARTS SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship is administered by Potter College and has separate deadlines and instructions.

ALAN MILLER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

  • Full-time English or ESL major
  • Must be freshman in first year of study at WKU
  • Financial need is considered
  • Outdoor/environmental justice is considered, but not required

KIIS-WKU DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH STUDY ABROAD SCHOLARSHIP

  • New scholarship! 
  • Full-time English major or minor
  • Slated to participate on a KIIS study abroad program
  • Overall GPA of 2.0+

DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH SCHOLARSHIP FOR RACIAL EQUITY

  • Full-time English major
  • English GPA of 2.0+
  • Open to students who are members of underrepresented or historically disadvantaged groups: Black or African American, Hispanic or Latinx, American Indian or Alaskan Native, Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander, Asian or Asian American, or two or more races

  • English major or minor (preferably in creative or professional writing)
  • Sophomore standing or above

NOMA DUNN SCHOLARSHIP
  • English major or minor (specifically grammar, semantics, usage)
  • Aspiring to teach (not specific to high school)
  • Good character
  • Overall GPA of 3.0+
  • English GPA of 3.0+
PAT AND WALLACE NAVE SCHOLARSHIP
  • English major
  • Junior or senior standing
  • Overall GPA of 3.0+
  • English GPA of 3.0+

COLONEL EDGAR BRYANT AND EDITH R. STANSBURY SCHOLARSHIP
  • Must be a full-time student majoring in English
PAUL BUSH MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
  • Recipients must be a full-time student at Western Kentucky University.
  • Recipients must either be currently enrolled in 3 hours of preparatory/co-req (English) classes or passed at least 3 hours (ENG 105) at Western Kentucky University (no developmental transfer work will be considered).
  • Recipients must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.7.
  • Financial need is an important consideration.
JIM & LANA FLYNN STUDY ABROAD SCHOLARSHIP 
  • Must be a full-time sophomore, junior, or senior majoring in English literature or English for Secondary Teachers or a graduate student specializing in literature.
  • Overall English GPA of 3.3+
  • Preference will be given to students applying to programs led by WKU English faculty members and to students without access to other study abroad scholarships.
  • Must submit a statement and most recent unofficial transcript.
