The WKU Department of English is celebrating this year's National Poetry Month by inviting students, faculty, alumni, and others to submit videos of themselves reading their favorite short poems. These videos will be posted on social media such as Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube periodically throughout the month.

Following the success of Black History Month and Women's History Month, the Academy of American Poets gathered teachers, poets, publishers, booksellers, and literary organizations to discuss and express the usefulness for a similar, month-long celebration of poetry. National Poetry Month was first inaugurated in 1996 to increase awareness and appreciation of poetry in the United States.  Each year, the Academy offers information about local poetry events during the month on their website, Poets.org.

National Poetry Month is celebrated throughout the country in several ways. Publishers often release their poetry titles during this month; many teachers and professors focus on poetry in their teaching units; and poetry readings and festivals are held by communities and organizations all throughout the country.

The WKU Department of English is joining the ranks of those nationwide who are celebrating poetry during this month. Department Head Dr. Rob Hale kicked off the celebration yesterday by reading the poem "Harlem" by Langston Hughes.

"Interest in poetry has had a renaissance in recent years, and we are excited to celebrate the power of language," explains Dr. Hale. "The department has never used social media to reach and serve our communities with video, and we hope many of our students, alumni, and friends will join us in the fun. We would love to hear from you!"
