The Raymond B. Preston Center was filled this past Wednesday with tables featuring the majors and minors offered to students at Western Kentucky University. While all the information about degree programs is available online, it is often more informative for students to have the opportunity to personally interact with the faculty and staff of different departments all in one location.

The Majors and Minors & Study Abroad Fair attracted 799 students to the Preston Center, 53% of whom are freshmen new to WKU. The WKU Department of English offers students the opportunity to major in four different disciplines: creative writing, professional writing, literature, and English for secondary teachers.

These programs are offered in addition to the following minors: English, teaching English as a second language, and film. Available materials about English majors and minors. Programs for Study Abroad, Study Away, and Faculty Led Studies were also a large part of the fair with their own informational tables and representatives for each program.

Students who may not have had the opportunity to attend on Wednesday may be interested in attending the Study Abroad Open House on Tuesday, October 2, 2018. Advisors will be available from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Honors College/International Center to discuss the many programs available, scholarship opportunities, and countries students may be interested in visiting.

One of the most well-known study abroad opportunities for students is in partnership with Harlaxton College, located in Grantham, United Kingdom. Students are able to study for a fall, spring, or summer semester and earn 12-15 hours of academic credit. Another unique opportunity offered through the Study Abroad program is with the Lorenzo de’ Medici International Institute.

English majors can choose to study from multiple class selections in literature, creative writing, and travel writing in Florence, Tuscany, or Rome. Another special opportunity available January 23- 30, 2019 will be the Sundance Film Festival Experience. Professors take a small group every other year for this Study Away program that is perfectly suited for creative writing, professional writing, and film students.

Students will participate in daily screenings, panels, and workshops. The festival also allows students to have the chance to make connections in an industry they are interested in after graduation.
