The WKU English Department would like to congratulate M.A. student Chelsea Mathes who has been accepted into Middle Tennessee State University’s English Ph.D. program. Mathes plans to study 20th century American Literature with a focus in Women’s Literature – specifically the Beat Generation. “I’ve chosen to study this because of my personal connection with the poetry of the Beat Generation and my general love for the literature of the 20th century,” said Mathes. Her ultimate goal is to become a literature professor. “I want to share [my] passion with my students.”
The opportunities and resources provided by WKU’s English department helped Mathes in a variety of ways. Through the teacher training program, rigorous coursework, and writing her own thesis, Mathes was able to expand her knowledge in order to prepare herself to earn her Ph.D. “I was able to work with some great mentors and professors in the department that really made my experience more fruitful,” said Mathes. “I’ve found a lot of support for my teaching experience and my scholarship in WKU’s English department.”
As Mathes moves on to Middle Tennessee State University, The WKU English Department would like to wish her the best of luck in her studies.
