WKU English Department Launches 2021 High School Writing Contests!
- Monday, August 10th, 2020
The WKU English Department has launched its fourth annual High School Writing Contest. Area high school English teachers will be invited to have their students participate in three categories - Composition, Creative Writing, and Literature. This year the prompts for all three categories address issues related to current events and how they have challenged students' ideas and experiences.
First-place winners receive $200 in cash and a $500 scholarship to major or minor in English at WKU; second-place winners receive $100 in cash and a $300 scholarship to major or minor in English at WKU; and third-place winners receive $50 in cash and a $200 scholarship to major or minor in English at WKU. Essays will be evaluated by members of the English Department.
The deadline for submissions is January 15, 2021.
"The High School Writing Contest has grown every year," says Assistant Department Head Ted Hovet, "and even in the unusual circumstances we are in now we are optimistic it will continue to do so. The WKU English faculty have done a great job of generating writing prompts that will allow students to engage with the current state of the world."
Last year 70 students participated from around a dozen area high schools, and nine students received prizes and awards. For more information visit the contest web site or contact Dr. Ted Hovet at ted.hovet@wku.edu.
