Students who study English often graduate with exceptional written and oral communication skills but can feel they lack the experience needed to show these skills to future employers. I certainly felt this way before I began my placement as a story and profile writer intern for the WKU Department of English. I could discuss the skills I have gained as an English major all day, but I lacked the practical application to show my experience and skill set in a way that would make me a strong potential job candidate.
Through my internship this semester, I have gained practical experience in my concentration and the confidence to step outside of my comfort zone. I’ve met students, faculty, and alumni that I would have never had the opportunity to learn from had I not taken the first step of applying last Spring.
An internship in the WKU English Department gives students the chance to take what they are doing in the classroom and apply it to real world situations. I have gained a better understanding about the work I find fulfilling and what I want to look towards in the future. I am forever grateful for this experience and the opportunity I’ve had to learn and grow as a writer.
Spring 2021 internship applications are due Tuesday, November 17, 2020 at noon. Visit the English Department Internship Program webpage for placement descriptions and applications.
