Reflection, Rhetorics of Sustainability, New Materialist Rhetorics, Writing Pedagogy
Dr. Jessi Thomsen received her BA in Studio Art and MEd in Secondary Teaching from Creighton University, her MA in English from the University of Nebraska at Omaha, and her PhD in Rhetoric and Composition from Florida State University. Her current research builds from her dissertation project “Alternative Cartographies: Reflection(s) for the Complexity of Writing and Sustainability,” and she is considering the ways in which our rhetorical practices, reflective engagements, and non/human relationships write the worlds we inhabit. Her previous work, which focuses on student engagement, appears in Teaching English in the Two-Year College and English Journal.
Jessi has always loved teaching because she gets to learn alongside the students in her classroom, especially as students encounter difference as a crucial component in how we write, communicate, and relate with one another. Her pedagogical approach encourages students to bring their own experiences and perspectives to the class for a shared process of exploration and inquiry. In addition to teaching, she has also worked in several mentoring roles with undergraduate researchers and interns, including participation at the Naylor Workshop for Undergraduate Research in Writing Studies.
When she isn’t teaching, writing, or mentoring, Jessi can be found watching Star Trek or listening to her favorite band The Mountain Goats with her partner and her golden retriever.
