While kindness is something we all advocate for as human beings, it is not necessarily one of the first words that come to mind when we thinking about teaching. Unfortunately, it is often the case that when we hear a teacher described as kind, people translate that to easy, but that is not true! Last fall a group of faculty participated in a CITL book club on Catherine Denial’s book A Pedagogy of Kindness. This short book covers how we can all show kindness to ourselves and to our students through our syllabi, via assessment, and in our classrooms without sacrificing our integrity and being “easy.” In this session, we will sum up Denial’s key ideas on these topics and share specific ways in which we are demonstrating a pedagogy of kindness in our work with students at WKU.  Join us for a conversation about how integrating Denial’s ideas about kindness into your life and classes can help both you and your students to feel better about the work we are doing in our classrooms.
