Housing & Residence Life
- Location: DSU South Lawn
- Time: 4:00pm - 6:00pm
A longtime tradition at WKU, Shantytown is an experience not to be missed. This program is designed to increase student awareness of homelessness in Bowling Green, the United States, and across the globe. Shantytown provides WKU students with an opportunity to experience homelessness.
Teams, comprised of 5-10 members, are handed informational booklets at check-in that feature the stories of homeless people. Teams are then tasked with constructing shanties out of provided materials that could withstand the environmental elements of the hometown of the homeless person featured in their booklet. The shanties are then evaluated based on how well, and for how long, they could shelter a homeless person in the assigned environment. Additionally, the booklets include information about various resources available to homeless individuals in Bowling Green, as well as information about how to get involved in the community and work to eradicate homelessness in Bowling Green.
All student organizations and community groups are invited and encouraged to organize a Shantytown team and participate in the program this year. Individuals looking to participate can also register; students who register as Individuals will be assigned to a team.
This year's program is the kick-off event for National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week on-campus, and is a collaborative effort of Housing and Residence Life, the ALIVE Center, and the Homeless and Housing Coalition of South Central Kentucky.
Please join us on the DSU South Lawn on Monday, November 17th from 4-6pm for an afternoon of shanty-building and thoughtful dialogue.
