WKU Housing & Residence Life Wins Academic Collaboration Award

Western Kentucky University Housing & Residence Life won the Academic Collaboration Award for their Living Learning Communities at the 2022 Southeastern Association of Housing Officers (SEAHO) annual conference, which took place in Asheville, North Carolina in the first week of March.
The award is presented to a housing department that currently has programs in place where academic affairs are intentionally involved in on-campus residential communities. The Academic Collaboration Award recognizes a program and/or community that involves collaboration between Housing and Academic Affairs.
A Living Learning Community (LLC) at Western Kentucky University is a group of students placed together on a floor or within a building based on a common major, common interest, or common program affiliation. The students live together, attend common classes, and participate in programs that cater to their academic, social, and personal needs. 23 Living Learning Communities were available for the 2021-2022 academic year. Over 115 programs were hosted in the fall 2021 semester, including a star photography experience for the School of Media LLC, and a private backstage and security tour of Opry Mills for the Criminology LLC.
Hilltoppers who participated in LLCs in the fall returned this spring at a rate 5.9 percentage points higher than those who did not, with 95.2% returning
“I’m thankful for my LLC because I have learned a lot from those who live around me,” said Emma McCubbins, a member of the Education “Top of the Class” Living Learning Community. “They have taught me what it's like to be in a community and have people around me that you can talk to at any point about whatever you need. Being around people that have the same interest as you is a great opportunity to learn from one another! I have made friends for life here and for that I'll always be thankful.”
SEAHO is a regional affiliate of the Association of College and University Housing Officers - International (ACUHO-I). The association represents the dedicated professionals of higher education student housing in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. SEAHO advances excellence in housing programs and staff by promoting best practices, networking, professional development and involvement opportunities.
