WKU Residence Hall Cleaning & Disinfection Protocols

WKU Residence Halls will follow our facilities vendor, WKU SODEXO's cleaning and disinfection protocols. They include scheduled cleaning of building public areas twice daily using EPA-registered disinfectants as outlined below.

  • Monday – Friday: Disinfecting high touch areas and shared bathrooms in all buildings twice-daily.
  • Weekends: Disinfecting high touch areas and shared bathrooms with a daily refreshing during weekends when facilitiesusage is lower.
  • University buildings, residence halls, and dining spaces will have hand sanitizer dispensers located at designated entrances.
  • Students are permitted to use their own supplies if they desire before the use of a common area.

Common areas include:

  • Lobbies
  • Kitchens
  • Elevators
  • Community Restrooms
  • Shower Rooms
  • Study Rooms
  • Vending Areas
  • Lounges
  • Water Fill Stations
  • Handrails
  • Doors

These areas are chemically cleaned daily as the first step of the process to remove all foreign materials.

After the initial cleaning has been completed, the area is then disinfected utilizing a damp wiping protocol. The areas are left damp to allow for the proper dwell time as directed by the manufacturer.

All disinfecting chemicals are provided either ready-to-use from the manufacturer or pre-mixed in chemical stations. This step ensures all chemicals are in the correct concentations.

Community restrooms & community shower rooms will be closed during cleaning/disinfecting to ensure proper contact time.

All cleaning steps follow the established Sodexo Standard Operating Procedures (PDFs):

Secondary Disinfection

After the intial cleaning and disinfection, the cleaning attendants will perform a secondary disinfection of the common areas and frequently touched surfaces. These surfaces include:

  • Light switches
  • Door knobs
  • Push plates
  • Telephones
  • Faucets
  • Shower fixtures and curtains
  • Community restroom fixtures and toilets

  • Hand rails in common areas
  • Elevator buttons

The cleaning attendants will utilize an approved aerosol, disinfecting chemical for this process.

Training and Inspections

All cleaning attendants have been trained on these protocols and are inspected / tested by our ESA Supervisors and Team Leaders. Refresher training is completed at a determined frequency or if deficiencies are found.

The WKU Housing & Residence Life operations staff will perform additional inspections as required to ensure all policies and procedures are being completed.
